thanks, Rob & Chris! all i wanted to know was what it was about, i guess and i'm not bugged at all; i eat, sleep and breathe skateboarding; i ride a park board, a slalom board and a longboard ( and my kids now ride all three, our newest aquisition being a custom-made J&D longboard that Claude & I gave Gabriel for his 11th birthday, three weeks ago "those 3dm wheels make the bombing really fast, mom!") thanks for fueling the stoke

Board Meeting

MBL:
As Chris has explained, Board Meeting was NOT a crazy outlaw speed event. It WAS a group of well-over 100 riders getting together to participate in a social cruise around the city. Much of the ride was pushing your board and all traffic laws were adhered to
Thsi was a fantastic meeting of the young and old (youngest was 13, oldest rider was 47) - new riders gained knowledge and many new friendships were made. If anything the more skilled and seasoned riders got newer riders to understand the importance of respecting the roads you skate on.
The only outlaw component of this event, was the fact that we did not have a permit, but that would be impossible!!!! I don't think any city would allow the longest and busiest roads in Canada to be closed.
What would be the difference of this, to the events that have been hosted in Ottawa in public parks and on public streets - permits would be the only difference.
My deepest sympathies go out to the Jamie McBryan, his brother and family.

After the meet and after the party the slalom people brought carloads of people out to our regular slalom spot for a slalom introduction. Not too shabby!

The ride went off without a hitch, I don't know about anyone else but I have lots more important and personal rewards to get out of skating then sponsorships or public acceptance. The only way skateboarding can stay alive is if we rally support and get the sport out there. The boardmeeting got us close to 100+ people together to network, make new friends, and share ideas. Not to mention the countless amount of people who SAW us out there having some fun on four wheels without being destructive, or overl aggresive. I agree the danger level is there, but those of us who took precautions and wore gear were the ones that made the biggest impression on the observers. And, yes, the ride through the mall was a touch aggresive, we could've done without it. But this is, NO QUESTION, something positive for the sport. We can't rely on competitions and corporations to make this happen, there needs to be some grassroots involvement.
No matter how much work any of us do to help this sport along, to gain public acceptance, to stop the common "roll of the eyes" that occours when you tell person your a skater boarder. The sport belongs to ALL OF US, and thats a group that needs to go sow some wild oats sometimes. Is it smart? Thats debatable. Is it gonna happen? Yep, and its inevitable. So don't let it bug ya, its not worth it.
Just my $1.05 paix.

Sorry for kind of losing it people. I didn't even know the poor kid. But ever since my wife died I over-react around death. We all deal with it differently. Thanks for the funeral info Ross. And thanks for being the adult in this time giving out press releases etc.

Don't know the whole story, so I'm not dissing you Greg, but not sure if it's disrespectful. Skateboarding is something loved by the one who died (I believe). Not much different from motorcycles at a biker funeral in my eyes.
It's going to be tough on the family no matter what, and I feel for them.

Can you guys explain to me how the tragic turn of events this week in Calgary and the planned outlaw ride in Toronto on Sept. 10 could possibly aid in moving skateboarding forward as a sport? What are the rest of us working for if people continue to 'outlaw' and participate in events that the rest of the world deems unreasonable? I acknowledege that part of the allure is the outlaw of the thing, but please, if you want sponsors, if you would like to make a living at what you love, let's try to keep some sort of sanity about the thing.....nobody's gonna believe it should be an olympic sport while they're scraping bodies off the asphalt with shovels on Yonge Street. That's just the way it works....

It was a fatal miscommunication between two "inseparable" brothers that led to tragedy on a southeast street Wednesday afternoon, says the surviving sibling.
Brent McBryan, 20, said he and Jamie, 22, decided to test the new longboard Jamie had just bought by going down the freshly paved hill on 27th Street.
Brent said he went down on his longboard to a stop sign at the intersection of 11th Avenue to watch for traffic, but didn't have a chance to signal before Jamie coasted down through.
Jamie was run over by a truck at about 3 p.m. and died late that night from massive head injuries. ....more http://www.canada.com/calgary/calgaryherald/news/city/story.html?id=dc2e3e71-ab25-4641-a57e-fd2e0b763f68

Calgary: Sessions & Races

Saturday Session looks off due to weather-- Skaterock bands The Hoosegow and Sheglank'd Shoulders are playing the Castle that night though. There may be a pre-show thing at the Ship. They may play a house party Sunday night as well. Good chance of the Edmonton S&B contingent showing up for Saturday and or Sunday.
Sunday looks do-able for a clover session and perhaps set a course as well--I'll bring my cones. 1pm?
Tuesday's weather is looking not too bad for slalom night. I'll e-mail the usual suspects with confirmations. We'll probably meet at Millennium at 6pm and go to a better spot (don't be late). May do a hill-bomb session at Marzden Hill afterwards as well.
I think myself and buckethead may be hitting Source late this afternoon or later this evening (Friday).
Mig! how goes, bro?

Wassup Brad! The official race was cancelled a couple of weeks ago which then turned into an outlaw event which actually turned into a slalom jam as the day went on. Most of the racers who took part in the speedboard races and parties were injured, hungover or both :), or had already left due to plane schedules. So everyone decided to take it easy.
Pierre put up a nice 36 cones dual tigh hybrid without timers and we raced whoever was ready at the start. Between 15 and 20 slalomers showed up (less than I expected due to the reasons above) from Toronto (Civ, Chris,...), Mtl (Pierre, Rookie, Seb, Raylene,...) and Quebec (Dan, Julie, Rich, Rick, and me).
It was a lot of fun! Cool, friendly atmosphere. Everyone had a great time!
By the way, you have to make it to The Farm next year, man! Great race! Will you be at next year's Dovercourt Open?

Greg, Calgary Sun reports 25 yr old ran the stop sign while lugging and struck a truck.
Injuries proved fatal. One neighbour said it was bound to happen as there is only a 2 way stop at the intersection and skateboarders never stop.
