A Jerry Garcia electric guitar by Travis Bean, circa 1975
The body made of koa painted a crème color, two black plastic pick-ups noting "Travis Bean," a silver metal pickguard; the neck made of silver metal, the fretboard made of ebony with ten iridescent mother-of-pearl rectangular-shaped inlays; the headstock silver metal with a pressed-stamp reading "715." Included is the custom-made black leather case (that only a TB1000 guitar fits in), with some of Garcia's items still inside: his guitar strings, a tuning fork, a string winder, and an unopened pack of his non-filtered Camel cigarettes. (Please note this guitar shows signs of wear and age as Garcia played it for a number of years.)
Length: 39in

Estimate: $250,000 - 300,000
Footnote:
One of the most well known of the Garcia guitars, he played it during some of The Dead’s and The Jerry Garcia Band’s most famous shows. Garcia owned three Travis Bean guitars; two TB500s and one TB1000 Artist. The TB1000 Artist (which this one in Lot 19 is), was a top-of-the-line instrument and only 755 were ever made. Garcia owned only this one. Seen in countless photos, this was one of his all-time favorite guitars. He played it at the Golden Gate Park show in 1975, the Orpheum Theatre show on May 21, 1976 (with The Jerry Garcia Band), and the other Orpheum Theatre show on July 12, 1976 (as well as at that show’s soundcheck). Additionally, he played this guitar during the recordings of the "Steal Your Face" album and "Terrapin Station" album. It is also the same guitar he was holding on the covers of the recently released albums titled "Don't Let Go" and "Grateful Dead: Live At The Cow Palace, New Years Eve, 1976." Included are two printed images of Garcia with this guitar, a CD of "Don't Let Go," and a DVD of the soundcheck from the Orpheum Theatre where he can be seen playing this instrument.

A photograph of Garcia holding this guitar appears in the book by Jerilyn Brandelius, Grateful Dead Family Album, (New York: Warner Books, 1989), p. 79.

Post Indian School
On 5/7/2007 Kenny wrote in from United States  (69.223.nnn.nnn)

Well, I did not take one photo or one second of video from the Indian 2007.

George was going to post the times, but I have not seen them.

Brunson and I were within 0.14 seconds apart on a 152 second course. Third place was Mitchell with a 158 second run. From there it fell way off. 5th place was JimZ who was 8 seconds off of Brunson and I.

It was a slaughter, and even though I did not win, it was a victory for me. My knee held up pretty well, but was sore as hell when I got home. I wont be racing any slalom this summer and am backing out of Kona. Its between the 4th of July and the Buckeye Open and seems like a real hot place to be in the mid-summer.

Yesterday, I rode 50 miles on my new bicycle, and the knee held up well. I am icing right now. My new bike is a joke. I actually think I gained wieght on the ride, as its soooooooo easy to ride. We had a mother of a headwind the last 21 miles, and I was just cruisin' down the road. I was SO FREAKING HAPPY to be back in the saddle. I want to be back in shape so bad. I dont care about slalom, or even park riding. I just want to be healthy again. I am planning on 100 mile bike ride this next weekend, but I am going to see how the knee is by Wednesday.

Life is good. Business has been super slow and we are hanging by a thread, but today I got two appraisal orders. Looks like we're keeping the house through May !!!!

Cat- we got a bed for you at our house. Begging sometimes works.

Buckeye Open
On 5/2/2007 Kenny wrote in from United States  (69.223.nnn.nnn)

Well, its time to start thinking about the Buckeye. I am doing the Hybrid on Saturday, which will be the "big day" with tunes, the Harley Davidson Sponsor and a nice long dual race.

I was wondering if we should narrow the tight field on Sunday. Qualify and take the top 60 racers? I dont want people missing their flights if we have to run 100 people on Sunday. What do you guys think.

Should we do an A, B, and C bracket for the open class? I want everyone to have fun. Let me know what you guys think.

CAT- THANKS FOR THE EARLY PAYMENT AND THE GOLD'S GYM GIFTS. I LOVE THEM ALL !!!
CANNOT WAIT TO MEET YOU.

Back from Albuquerque and it was a blast !!!! Yea, I talked smack went down hard !!! I thought I could do it, but Brunson was the man this year. Congrats.

The course was a riot, and I could have run it a hundred times. Did about 25 before the race. The triple-ups were even fun, once you had them dialed.

The morning of the race, it was blue sky and calm. All the invites, except I think John O. got runs right off the bat. The timer did not work on my first run, so I let Palmer go first. I went second and had a good run. I lost my form on the second cone after the footbridge and stood way up on a toeside turn. If I lost any time, it was on that cone.

I had a great run, not as hard as I could possibly go, but we all took it a little easy on our first run. Brunson did not go all out on his run, and beat me by 0.14 seconds. I told someone that if anyone beat my first run, they deserved to win. I thought for sure I won, as the wind was coming up the hill when we got busted. It would have been impossible for any of us to better our times on a second run. When I found out I got second, I was bummed for 1 second. Not 2 seconds. Losing to Brunson was fine with me. He was bummed last year when I won, but I was happy for him. He has been practicing and is one hell of a skateboarder on any terrain. Better, younger, and in good shape. Plus, he's family with the PPS thing.

It was a great weekend. Biker Sherlock is cool as s#@!. I had a great time meeting and hanging with him. The Texans. Fadell and Mitch. The locals. The Sector 9 team. It was a total blast. Abe and Science at the park. Budro winning the park slalom. It was sick.

Albuquerque is a total skateboard mecca. More fun than almost anywhere I could think of. The locals totally took care of us. Chris Miller kicked some hard ass.
Dave almost died hitting his head into the guard rail at full tailwind speed. He was ok, but my God it looked gnarly.

I am coming back sometime in the fall with a crew and will be at the Indian Ditch 2008, if I get invited. Thanks.

Spring projects. Domestic duties.
On 4/23/2007 nature wrote in from United States  (69.223.nnn.nnn)

Luke, sounds like your getting into the groove out there. I am happy for you.

We've been working around the house all weekend and trying to get our crib ready for summer. The garage now has heat and a/c, the master bedroom and bath are gettin finished, the yard just got 75 bags of topsoil and 100 pounds of grass seed. Our dining room is getting all new trim, molding, built-in cabinets, etc. The fence needs stained, mulch needs put down. It never stops.

We have been so busy, I haven't even had time to THINK about skateboarding or especially racing. My mind is totally somewhere else. I remember being obsessed with skateboard racing and winning. Now I just feel like a dad and husband, vs. a racer with the eye of the tiger. Ever since my back, knee, hernia, and thumb operations, my focus has just been different.

I am sure some guys are gearing up for the season. Good for them. I've got more important things on my mind. Ryder is growing up and will require much more time this summer.

Planting grass seed is no fun.

Taking a break from yard work and getting my protein fix.

After the yard work is done, its time to fire up the grill. Ah, summertime is almost here.

I built this little ramp for Ryder and the nieghbor kids for skateboards, scooter, and bikes. We finished it this morning, which I took off work. He loves it and it getting the hang real fast.

We've got our hands full back here in the heartland, its just too hard to even think about skating right now.

When is that Indian race thingy? Has that already gone down? Did Cabbage win?
I know he was focused. Someone drop a post and let me know whats going down.

wrist is always better than ankle
On 4/22/2007 Luke wrote in from United States  (72.197.nnn.nnn)

Well breaking your wrist is always better than breaking your ankle. At least you can still skate if you got the balls. I broke my ankle skating a couple years ago and that just sucked. Had to get a damn metal plate a screws put in permanently.

All is well here in Oceanside. Work at Gravity is great and everyone is really nice and chill. I skate and bodyboard everyday after work and on the weekends. Gravity and Cartel bodyboards are friends from years back so they hooked me up nicely with a new board and wetsuit. I'll be picking up a used surfboard hopefully sometime in the next month. My apartment is a block from the beach and its got a pretty good beach break that I ride at. I skated the Encinitas YMCA skatepark yesterday that I've been dreaming about for the past few years. But I gotta say I'm kind of disapointed. It was too drawn out of a design. There was no sketchy-ness or anything to make you think. But whatever, not worth $10 unless you like deep bowls or an X-Games vert ramp. I got my ex girl coming to visit this friday for 9 days, but I don't know what she's going to do while I'm working. And then my dad is visiting memorial weekend for about 5 days. Kenny, where can I fit you, Ethan, and James in? You guys are welcome to visit whenever but your most likely going to have to get a hotel. I'm living in a studio and there's no couch and very little floor space haha. But there's a La Quinta Inn, Motel 6, and Guesthouse Inn about 15-20 blocks north of me.

Ethan at Hood River??
On 4/21/2007 Pauliwog wrote in from United States  (65.122.nnn.nnn)

Hey Ethan, Good choice, you will dig it. The G/S on Saterday is a long hill and fun(but a little slow on the rider turnaround time). The T/S on Sunday is pretty fast if we get the usual tail wind. Bring wheels in the 85ish-Front(and trim them down some- 83a-ish you'll want to trim them more), 80ish-Rear combination and you'll be about optimal for the pavement. Don't even bother with wheels smaller than 68mm, you're on that level now, I've seen you and you'll want the speed(unless you want to bring one set of cambrias or 66 Zigs to feel-out the tight course then change wheels).

Bring a park board, there's a decent skatepark on the "downslope" part of town and it's not hard to find.

Make your reservations NOW because that town is FULL of events that time of year and every motel gets booked up. Try looking up "Prater Motel" on the internet, that's where we stay, it's a little mom-and-pop motel, cheaper than most places, airconditioned, new carpet, in the middle of everything you'll need and not far from anywhere you will want to go. If you can't find a room anywhere, post on the CSA forum to see if anyone wants another racer in their room, or email me with the name-click-thingy and I can squeeze you in.
