still haven't hit them all...
On 11/19/2005 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

I still need to scope out the ditch at the Balloon Fiesta Park, and Encantado (same ditch?), and lower 3-mile (past the park, I guess that would be called 4th Mile ditch maybe....), and Mama Bear (should we even consider that a ditch?), and.....I've never skated the one at Bridge and Unser (always wet), and there's one somewhere near a school somewhere that I have no directions or names for, but I've seen it and it looks rideable (the magic mystery ditch that is so indescript that no-one will ever find it, my secret gem! yeah right). OH, and that Tanoan thing.

Anyone ever skate the dams way up in the foothills? Not ditches, DAMS.

So, there ya go Dan, you HAVE skated Ventura, we were just calling it Lowes. And you've also skated La Cueva, so it's not overlooked by us!

ABQ Ditches
On 11/19/2005 GBMII in Albuq wrote in from United States  (68.35.nnn.nnn)

Danno; It takes a while - even for a local - to skate all the good ditches in Albuq.

Ventura is an often overlooked jewel in the heights. Ventura is north of Harper. It runs from Holbrook to I-25 (ending behind Lowes) just south of Paseo, on about the same pitch as Indian School. It is "wet" a lot of the time and it requires a pick up at the bottom to run the whole thing, so it gets overlooked often for "easier" ditches.

Also overlooked is LaCueva, up above the Carmel ditch (and the High School)where we had the race this year, east of Wyoming. It's kind of like a cross between Indian School and the Bear. Huge asymetric buttery walls with better tranny than the Bear. The pitch is kinda light, so if there's un uphill wind it's slow, but if it's a slack wind or downhill it's an all time must-hit.

And "good" is relative. Some people like parking blocks at 3-mile and Eldorado best, some like 4-hills (a real screamer). Concussion or Live Oak are northeast gems too. The 200 yards of terror (Tanoan) shown in Concrete Wave #3 ABQ article is by far the steepest thing I've dropped on a pintail. Too bad it ends up dirt/cactus/tumbleweeds.

And don't even get me started on the west side.....

Hey GBMII,
I'm not a loc but I've been out to ABQ 3 times this year with a guide and thought I hit all the ditches.
Which one is Ventura?
I know the 2 pino ditches have lots of names(Harper, et al..), is it one of those? is this an eastside ditch?

I'll be there but I won't be skating because they don't have a broken down old man catagory, even if they did I would come in 5th in a 4 man heap.

It's still alot of fun to was everyone rip it up.

Best Trick $100 - Abe Towrey F/S Rock on the gigantor wall-ride extension.

Great fun was had by all. Perfect weather, no cops and an excellent course complete with parking blocks, jump ramps and extensions.

Everybody ripped. The winners showed a mix of tech and gnarliness, as well as old and new school and consistency.

The contest ran in a jam format, 11 riders per heat, with the top 3 advancing. The final heat was a super jam deciding the final 6 spots.

Abe Towrey, Jeff Budro and John West advanced out of the hotly contested first heat, just edging out G.I. Joe, CW Dunn and a stylishly charging Charlie Pacheco. Heat 2 showed some masterful contest riding by EP, LBR and this young ripper named Star. A lot of the contestants petered out on the bottom of the 200 yard-long course. These guys ripped the ENTIRE course. These guys had what it took to push Brunson, Lowrie and Pat MacDougal out of the finals.

The finals were an endurance test. As the contestants finished one run they would sprint back to the top of the course just in time start their next. Abe was going huge but got bit by a few too many falls. Budro reached into his bag of tricks and threw down Judos, Saran Wraps and Boned-out Airs off the jump ramps and combined them with slides, r&rs and G-turns. John West has been skating thse blocks as long as anybody and did not disappoint with 4 block rock n rolls and disasters and a fakie tail slide at speed on the lower section blocks that went at least 20 feet. LBR showed contest experience, staying on and using the whole course for his new/old banked freestyle routine.

After Heat 3 concluded, a short break was taken and then the Best Trick Started. After blowing everyone out with a F/S RnR Abe was trying to launch off the jump ramp to to 50/50 on the top of the 4 foot wallride extension, after a few painful slams he realized is wasn't gonna happen. He wasn't challenged by much more other than PALMER coming close to a feeble to fakie on the extension or Rockys miller flip attempts.

Conspiracy, Sector 9 and Z kicked down mad schwag and everyone walked away with some goodies. Event host Tim Mott came up with some of the most original trophies ever.

The BBQ and pool session later at PALMERs egg was all time.

Thanks to all who came out and supported us.

See you next year......
