It's just now official!!!! The Blue Smoke Jet Luge will be appearing and running the 1/4 mile at Maryland International Raceway (Budd's Creek) on August 20th as the opening "act" for the Jet Wars Show.
Here is the headline for the show: For the first time ever, witness the world’s fastest fire-breathing Jet Funny Cars and Jet Dragsters in side-by-side eliminations! Plus Bob Motz's JET POWERED Kenworth, the Adrenalin Crew Motorcycle Stunt Show and MIR's exciting FRANTIC 7’s! It's the wildest show in drag racing - don't miss it!
The promoter asked if I could get that "thing" over 55mph.... I just smiled...
For event info goto their site at http://www.mirdrag.com/ and look for JetWars
I need you truck ideas fast... Any potential sponsors want in????
Wish me luck.

Nice fabrication job, but how do you keep the contact patches of the rear wheels aligned with one another?
Whith a pair of rollerballs, this (and the NoveSid truck) are a fine idea. With "square" wheels, the absolute maximum possible and most predictable breakaway are acheived by keeping the wheels as concentric to one another as possible.

Thanks Adam. But as a Website it stinks.. I just got a new host and need to learn to structure and write the site... right now www.jetluge.net redirects to my old site.
and of course not to nit pick but the specs you found are of the Civilian RC Aeromodeler version... I held out a long time in order to be able to intercept the Aerospace version... specs are similar but this baby pumps 52 lbs of thrust with the FOD screen... Go ahead grunt like Tim Allen...

Just watched Bob's video and checked out his web site. Way too cool! Anyone with $5K handy should run right out and buy your very own JetCat P-200 turbine:
Thrust: 45 lbs @ 112,000 RPM Weight: 5 LB Diameter: 5.12 inches RPM Range: 32,000 - 112,000 RPM Exhaust gas temp.: 580°C-690°C Fuel consumption: 24 oz per/min at full power Fuel: Jet A1, 1-K kerosene Lubrication: approximately 5% synthetic Oil in the fuel Maintenance interval: 25 hours
Check out those RPMs!

(No) rear steering

Thanks for the info. I got some questions for more pictures, so here´s a couple. Well, the bracket sticks out a little on the right, would be nice with a slightly shorter damper.
Kanufi: I've also had some problems with dodgy steering and no rear steer - I tried both Randal R-II and DH at the front on this deck in Åre/Sweden this year, and it steered somewhat OK with the R-II, but very slow with the DH. One way to fix this is a shorter wheelbase (I've built two such decks - one is in Germany now, with damper, getting tried by Peter Sanftenberg, owner of Rolls Rolls). The other way might be a normal wheel base with a really turny front, with damper to calm it down.
Cheers, Peter

Bob, I've been following your project for awhile now, and I'm extremely impressed. I'd LOVE to see what that thing would do in the 1/4 mile!
AFA trucks, you've come to the right place! JimZ, Geezer-X and all the other machine-heads with large last initials visit the ol' Geek...er, I mean TRUCK forum. My money is on an extremely well-built 3/8" or 10mm axle with possibly FOUR trucks: Weight be damned, let's make this thing STABLE.
The biggest problem is your desire to make the steering sharp enough to turn a street corner. My guess is that you'll have to give up a little (or alot) of sensitivity for stability at speeds reaching (or surpassing) 100 mph. Dang.
As always, best of luck in this project! If nothing else, you'll be able to pay for it in a year or two with what appearance fees you can charge.

Hey Eric, Thanks!! I'll try to get it to you hopefully some time soon (whenever I get caught up with a schload of stuff to do). At the moment it's not a big deal since I really generally only use that truck in Avalon/Cambria situations.
That's cool about the variety of trucks at The Farm that you mentioned, that's always good to see. Hopefully I'll make it out to a race "back East" sometime and see everybody.

Really High Speed Trucks

First if you have not seen or heard of the "JetLuge" project go to www.jetluge.net I am in serious need of 4 high quality trucks that will be stable at extremely high speeds and still be able to turn a typical street corner. The prototype has z-rollers because thats what I had around. The obvious off the shelf stab at it is Randal luge trucks 50 degree baseplates in the front and 35 in the rear, but I am concerned of the machining quality and alignment out of the box for speeds approaching >100mph. If any one is interested in solving this part of the project with their product or solution I will consider it good sponsorship and the trucks will be seen by more than just skaters.
This is absolutely not a joke. More video coming but watch the static testing at my site.
The jet luge has been operation for just 2 weeks and has already been seen by hundreds at a gravity event in New York, thousands at a RC Jet Rally in Lebanon PA, and on August 20th around 10 thousand at Maryland International Raceway during the Jet Wars show. Each time I show this to people they ask me what wheels and trucks can go that fast... (estimated 130+) and I have to apologize and tell them that I don't know about the trucks yet.(or the rider for that matter...lol), but there will be 3 or 4 of them with the big balanced ABEC11 Flywheels on them. So I need some speed freaks help here... I am not to cheap to purchase the product that will do the deal, but sponsorships are alot more fun when you are both trying to push the others toys to new limits.
If you have something for me, contact me at the above email address. Thank you. Lugebob

Ima newb pool rider. I am going to purchase some sixtracks and I was wondering what bushings would be best suited on sixtracks for pool carving for a 150lb rider. My setup is LY smoke deck (38 in) with 95a bds dub cons. I have always ridden randalls and upgraded my bushings to Khiros. The same upgrades for randalls suited for conventional trucks?

Hey, Paul Howard...
Send that thing to me and I'll machine it to match the new ones which accept Grippins, Manx, and of course all 3DM wheels.
And on a totally unrelated note, there was a really wide variety of trucks being ridden at The farm...

Exkate Customer Service

I bought some Exkate trucks back in 1995ish. I bent an axle when I first got them and it was a nightmare getting them replaced. Their customer service guy was terrible.
Two weeks ago, I went to change the bushings on these but the hanger would not come off. I called Jim at Exkate and he was really helpful. He asked me to send them in, he'd pop them loose and clean them up. They came back timely, lubed, new hardware, bushings and risers!
Apparently, the customer service really improved with the buyout of the company. I just hope they can get some blue bushings manufactured soon. The blues really give the trucks a smooth, surf-like ride.

no rear steering

some dudes used to ride boards with home-made rear trucks with no rear steering - in the '70's during the first wave of speed runs. These were mostly for going straight down hills
I myself have run a dewedged Randal 28 degree plate which is in fact what I ride most on my speedboard. I like having very little rear steer, I think my set-up works out to about 22 degrees or so, with about 45 in the front. Very stable. I also run harder bushings in the rear.

New setup

Want to share some excitement I have right now - just got back from a hill with my friends, trying out a new truck setup on my Rolls Rolls. Worked like a charm! I've been tinkering around with steering dampers on longboards for quite some time now, and this is my fourth deck using dampers - and the best one so far. Pity I didn't build this deck myself though...
The back has no steering, using a RII at zero degrees with blue hard Stimulators, flat washers - the strange kingpin angle requires hard bushings, but still feels very soft. This takes a really torsionally stiff deck, because rear foot steering have to go directly to the front via the deck.
The front now uses a Seismic at 45 degrees with extra-light springs, and a steering damper mounted behind the truck, hidden under the wheel fenders. No linkage is used, reducing play. I've moved the truck a little forward to make more space for the leverage. The damper allows me to run the truck without any preload at all at speed, feeling very soft, but stable. It turns like crazy, feels absolutely linear, and won't bottom out - 75A wheels can be made to break traction even at pretty slow turns before that happens. The low deck also makes 75A 97 mm Flywheels easier to slide - guess that's a piece of cake for many of you, but for a newbie like me it's good news.
I've previoulsy tried various Randal RII and DH (damped and undamped) setups, with and without ball joint bearings at the pivot and hanger/kingpin, tall and wide soft bushings, etc etc. I've liked them, but they never got this linear and instant turning.
Without rear steer the deck won't fish-tail before actually shifting the weight sideways, and only one damper is necessary since it only steers in front. Also, it seems that really rough surfaces won't throw the rear around as much. Even the steering remains pretty unaffected on rough surface, probably because of the damper. I love it! Except when trying to ride backwards, wich is totally impossible... And it's a matter of taste also - my friend tried it right after hopping off a dropped stiff deck with similar wheel base, DH trucks at about 40 degrees front, 25 back - He hated my deck, calling it scaringly instant steering.
This board have earlier clearad IGSA technical inspection at 4,0 kg with 97 mm wheels, but without the damper - now it's around 4,4 kg, so if the damper is allowed and considered safe, it will still clear.
Any thoughts? Someone made something similar?
Cheers, Peter
