Gullwing Alpines
On 7/14/2005 Jo Jo Fuzz wrote in from United States  (68.123.nnn.nnn)

Sector Nine has pics of them in their catalog..i think...

design is similar to Gullwing's cruiser trucks...or like randalls they ride real nice. Ijust got them and have been screwing around with different durometer bushings.

GULLWING ALPINE TRUCKS

I've got the new Gullwing Alpines. They're badass. I don't know if the general public can get them yet......I'm special. Ha hA! But seriously.. these trucks are sweet. As we all know Gullwing has been around for a long time making quality gear. Look for them.

Indy kingpins
On 7/12/2005 dave wrote in from United States  (24.22.nnn.nnn)

I don't like the new stud pins.
So have been using old baseplates
with grade 8 bolts. 2" I think.
For slalom I use 2.5" with stims
bottom and a soft bottom bushing
on top.

stock kingpin length
On 7/11/2005 K-LEE wrote in from United States  (198.133.nnn.nnn)

After a hard weekend of ditchriding and watching my buddy snap 2 Indy kingpins in 2 days, I'm looking to buy grade 8 kingpins to replace all my suspect pins. I'm at work and don't have access to my trucks at home, plus I'm lazy and don't feel like banging out kingpins and measuring them when I get home, so I was wondering if anyone knew these measurements off the top of their head or had some lying around to measure quickly for me.

How long are the following?:

Stock Randal DH kingpins (longer than RII?)

Stock Indy kingpins (the newer Stage 9 stud pins that snap even though they're "stronger")

Stock Tracker Dart kingpins (sixtrack size, but hanger width probably doesn't matter)

Stock Destructo High kingpins (same as Darts and Indy's?)

Thanks in advance.

Holey Trucks
On 7/11/2005 GC wrote in from United Kingdom  (80.229.nnn.nnn)

Interesting to see these are finally around. The guy who designed these used to run Surrey Skateboards ("Britain's oldest skateboard shop"- sadly closed a few months after 25+ years), in fact the video looks to have been shot in the streets around the store. Over a year ago he showed me some prototypes, fresh from some kind of 3D resin printing device. Obviously non-functional and very strange to handle, sort of waxy with visible 'pixels' like a solid computer graphic. More recently I saw the first aluminium versions. The pivot isn't skinny, I think it's a standard 'fat' pivot (there seem to be two standard sizes don't there?, could be wrong), it's just that the hanger tapers into the pivot with no built up area. Does this create a weak spot?, I suppose it could but it seems to me that every hanger is this thin at the point where the pivot hits the cup anyway.

The most notable thing about them (other than the holes) was the deep bushing cups. The hanger seemed to be symetrical so I guess that means zero rake, i'm fairly certain the angle is 45 degrees. I think the idea was to keep everything natural and simple. I haven't ridden them but the protoypes did appear to be well made and they were designed by a skater who knows, rides and sells a lot of cruiser type boards.

I have no connection with the guy involved, in fact i'm p*ssed with him as there are no local skateshops that sell anything but popsicle boards anymore...

adding aluminum
On 7/5/2005 duane wrote in from United States  (68.15.nnn.nnn)

cast hangers (almost everything except machined plate stock like JimZ, radikal) weld poorly as cast is full of small voids that cause a lot of trouble

it will however bond well so adding reinforcement with glue (epoxy) should work well. You have to be real careful when gluing aluminum as oxide forms almost instantly. the best method I've heard is to do the final sanding of surfaces using fine emory cloth and thinned epoxy as lubricant, which then coats and seals the raw surface prior to the real glue-up

Altering current truck design

Is it possible to add more aluminum to a hanger for the purpose of re-enforcement, without depleting its structural integrity?

superstrong cromoly kingpin...
On 7/3/2005 herbn wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

for no rattles?deep cups to hold those slippery bushings,,,eeh someone was searching for positive points, needed to fill a page... no print on ride height ,looks ok,not really low enough for me but then again nothing (buyable),no talk of rake, that would confuse or even scare some people(a truck with a built in rake:) gravity cast?gravity sort of has a hand in filling everybody elses molds as well, well tensor is diecast and that can be very good too. Why would a cromoly king pin rattle any less than a grade 5,it might even be grade 5. They look ok ,the holes seem kind of hoaky,i don't know ,made up or reworded attributes turn me off. The seats for the bushings don't need to be deep just accurate, flat with sharp corners,or at least matching the radius on the bushings, square works best though.

RTS Opinions
On 7/1/2005 JD wrote in from United States  (68.160.nnn.nnn)

Thanks for the feedback on the RTS Trackers. I got to try some 139 Darts on my pintail and the combo is great for my needs. The geometry is similar if not identical to the RTS minus the longer kingpin. I'll definitely need that though since the kingpin nut is pretty much only hand-tight right now. I set the Darts up with Bones Mediums and it makes the Loaded feel like a shortboard w/ awesome flex. I think I've been converted - going to trade some Indy 169s for SixTracks soon on my Pig board.

3 layers
On 6/30/2005 Chris Chaput wrote in from United States  (66.116.nnn.nnn)

I didn't bend the wood into a drop-deck, and I didn't drop the trucks through the deck to lower the CG. Instead I flush-mounted trucks to the top of three layers, giving me a drop of about 1 1/4" (twice the thickness of the plywood). Both the nose and the tail are dropped in this fashion. The holes on either side of the front trucks are for wheel clearance, while the rear is narrow enough not to rub. The semi-circular cutouts in the top layers of the front are to reduce the weight.

At the risk of sounding like a total idiot, what's with that, um, nose section? Was Maryhill such a long race that you needed a food and beverage tray?

Actually, the tail section has me stumped as well, but one imponderable at a time, I guess...

Geezer-X and McCree
On 6/29/2005 Chris Chaput wrote in from United States  (66.116.nnn.nnn)

Ebony and Ivory, together in perfect harmony, side by side on my skateboards...
What do these two truck gurus have in common? They both produced titanium components that found their way to top of the podium at Marryhill this weekend.

Mark's Radikal Trucks on my Roe Bullet with 76mm Flywheels and Biltin-7's took the SGS.

Geezer-X's 1/2" OD titanium hanger-extending axles on a 6 wheeled speedboard with 83mm Flywheels and Biltin-7's took the Downhill.

Can't we all just get a longboard?

the bend
On 6/29/2005 herbn wrote in from United States  (152.163.nnn.nnn)

in a pivot doesn't ,by itself make a truck turn quick,it's the angle that the hanger pivots on that determines mostly how quick a truck will turn. On most trucks the angle of the kingpin will have some influence on the pivoting angle of the hanger, most of the time it makes the hanger pivot at a lesser degree, on a randal it's lined up (mostly) and does't effect the angle much. The pivot's angle determines the ratio between leaning and steering angles. If one truck needs to be leaned less to achieve the same steering it's gonna be a quicker more responcive truck.

rtx/rts
On 6/29/2005 j wrote in from United States  (67.122.nnn.nnn)

for just cruising around on a pintail, a 139mm rtX in front
(with a wedge, slim side forward) and a 139mm rtS in back
on a flat riser is great.

worth it to upgrade the bushings at some point.
In front I have bones soft
bushings with two cups under the bottom,
in back, a yellow
stimulator bottom and a bones top.

have this on a comet spoon, it's a dream ride.
not for real speed, would wobble,
but it's fine for under 20mph or so and feels
very responsive even at 6 mph
which is where most of my riding happens.

the kingpins are longer.
this is for turning, not grinding.

The rtx has a higher roll center and the
kingpin might have more of an angle.
it's a little twitchier, the difference
is fairly subtle. you could have two rtx's,
or two rts's and have almost as much fun.

Truck pivot angles
On 6/29/2005 Gord wrote in from Canada  (70.67.nnn.nnn)

I don't think the whether the pivot is bent or straight on it's own will make a truck turny or stable. The Tracker Aggro Quicktrack and Cutter were two trucks with bent-angled pivots and they both turned super sharp.

RTS/RTX
On 6/29/2005 Nicnoyd wrote in from Germany  (213.157.nnn.nnn)

The main difference between the RTS and Indys is the pivot and baseplate, the pivot is bent - whis is said to give it a more stable feel/later turning...
The Indys as well as the RTX have a straight pivot, which gives the truck a turnier feel...
For your type of riding I think you can´t go wrong with a rtx/rts combo - I just set up an Airflow 81 with 139 rtx front/rts back- seemed to work pretty good!
RTS all around would be more stable, and RTX all around would be somewhat similar to Indys,I guess...
If you want to ride bowls, you might want to use inverted allen-style kingpins like Trackers and Grindkings, cause the kingpin nut sticks out a bit far out...
Hope this helps a bit!
