Scott-

I wouldn't worry too much about hc. He's not a very good skater anyhow---can't even do a frontside 360 slide (what a noob)! JK dude, he knows what he's talking about.

I've been sliding a little and had some very very good luck with one of the shorter sector 9 pintails (maybe around 40" range) with like indies and krypto 88a in like 66mm. Closest thing to "real slides" I've ever been able to do was with this setup. But if hc doesn't recommend it...

HC - Sorry man i didnt mean to be a dick about that video.
WHat is a short board..... I have no clue what you guys are talking about, do you mean a normal skateboard?

Joesph - If you are getting a board just for sliding trust me, go with the ones i advised you to get.

R.ene. - Flame boy, what are you talking about sliding is only a small part of longboarding.. ITS HUGE, so is soul carving, banks and ditches.
THAT IS LONGBOARDING... IF YOUR GONNA DO KICKFLIPS? BUY A SHORTDECK SKATEBOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

joseph, hc

if you guys are around 145lbs and you like flexy boards you should try the sector 9 cosmic 1 (25" wb) set up with webb shogo trucks and your choice of slidable wheels (I like flashbacks). I posted a review on the truck forum so I'm going to repeat myself a little, this setup is sick! super low without being a drop through, slides very easily and predicatbly. not to mention that when you carve you can lean and lean and lean and .......lean even more without any abrupt reaction. depending on the wheels eventually it will loose traction, but always progressively and easily recovered. if you're heavier or don't like flexy boards I suspect the ly mummy would be a better choice for you (same wb but stiffer), but I 've never tried it. just the opinion of somebody who used to dislike s9s.

i can pendulum just asking how to improve my technique (hc) but thanks for the info (yet to try the change in footing was flat out today.). my trucks are really turney. i have them risen and tightened them until about 2-3mm before bite on the hardest turn.

i have a few sets of r2's but prefer to slide standard trucks. for some reason i find randals to be grippy? i mean i can slide them easy enough but if i am setting up a board specifically for sliding i use standard indys. i slide my downhill boards to stop with r2's though so i can do it.

Scott--

just a little advice from your fellow canuck. saying "that sucks" or "you are ignorant" or "just do it" --that's not too interesting or helpful. Why don't you spend a bit more time explaining and backing up your opinions? I mean, okay, the guy in hc's video is not the world's greatest slider--so what? This isn't a "best of" site, and we are all, yes, even a highschooler from nova scotia, we are all learning. That's why people post up here. So, what does the person do that's good in the video? What do they do that's not so good? Do they make common mistakes to be avoided?

I think it's really great that you are stoked on sliding and all, but just remember, it's only *one* small part of the big world of skating. It's pretty easy to slag other people's stuff--and sorry, but yours just ain't that spiff either, b'y.

joseph, regarding shorter boards around 19-21" wb range.

i am kinda looking for another one myself.
check out solidskate.com

what i have:
a powell flame 15.5" wb for freestyle sliding (360's and such), standing slides, etc. plus its my park board.

a powell stealth 17"wb redrilled to 19"wb. this deck is 10" wide and 7 ply. too soft after redrilling. need 8ply.

i use my lib tec to learn walking tricks and such, some standing slides, and downhill sliding.

also, joseph, are your trucks loosen up? a turny truck setup will help out your pendulums. maybe play around with wedges. or get randal r-2...

scott, the video was so-so, i just think it's cool that sliding is spreading world wide now, that random sites will pop up featuring sliding.

btw, scott, how did you learn about sliding?

any examples of a suitable board? i can get gravity models in australia and sector 9 but i dont like sector 9 but am reluctant tot deal with shipping after my ordeal witht the turner (turner/3dm service was excellent i am refering to the customs and steep taxes put on it on arrival in australia)

Or a better question probably is what do you see as the best all round board for sliding? I could make my own so what do you think? I already know your opinion on wheelbases so what do you think long or short kick? Kicks at both ends? Concave? Rocker? I know it should be stiff. And i would make it 10 inches wide for comfortable foot placement.

what wheels do you see as the best? And definitely while i am working on my technique flat spot resistant. abec 11 92a flashies? cliff coleman sliders? no skoolz? if so what duro? bones bombers? can only get 64mm 85a? anything i've missed (dont want anything smaller than 64mm and would prefer 70mm+

also how do i help keep my bearings in good shape. i've been useing spacers and speedrings and have not damaged them with the skate tool i've just found that sliding wears them real quick.

And yes i have been studying the gravity videos but dont have the bones ones and at this very moment cant afford them. i will film myself this weekend and try and work out what i'm doing wrong or more so how to improve. if i can work out how i'll put it (the video) on this site for other opinions.

joseph, i would recommend something longer,
a 19-21" wb allows a wide stance and maximum wb with rear foot on tail.

btw, cliff coleman rides boards like this.

and if you get into pools or bowls ....

also, wb means inner holes to inner holes.

yeah i'm doing the drop stance. i'll try it with the foot further forward tomorow. what do you think of 80's vision re issues?

just as a note the truck was about 1-2 metres behind me if i tried i could probably touch it. if i slid infront of him i would not be writing this. he was not just getting anoyed he was doing it to scare me being a smart arse. and there was enough room to pass but at my sliding skill level i could not do a slide tight enough or dart across the road before he would have hit me.

anyway thanks for the advice.

joseph, seems to me that your stance is spread way too wide, move that rear foot over the rear truck.

doing the 'drop stance'? (see sample pics on my page)

btw, when cars catch up to you, slide to a stop and let them pass, don't piss off drivers, live to ride another day.

oh, videos??? learn by watching not reading...

i will get one of those 80's boards when i have money which is going to be a long long time away now that i need new wheels (you can read me getting anoyed in the wheels forum) my front foot is about half a centimetre behind the rear mounting holes of the front truck and my rear foot is on the tail so my weighting might be off?

joseph, first of all, short board doesn not mean a 'popsicle stick'.

there are plenty of old school fat board on the market with plenty of wheelbase selection. (a 19-21" is a great choice for sliding)

a board with kicktail allows better leverage and control.

a libtech 44 is huge with about 26" wb, (i know cuz i have one). if you slide with your foot on the tail, your weight distribution is all off. front foot should be right behind that frt truck.

are you sliding with your foot on the tail?
where's your front foot?

even if your are 6'3", you still should look into a short board.

anyways, your are pretty much describing have too much weight on your rear foot, and thus falling backward on the second pendulum, thus having to put the rear hand down.

video yourself, watch yourself, compare to slide videos (got those bones videos?)

i have just got my pendulums after a LOT of crashes and practising. i wasw able to slide over a year ago but just could not get pendulums until recently. probably because until recently i was a rail grabber.

anyway to the question. when i pendulum i found i had to go very fast does this mean my technique is off?

i slide with my hand in the air like a normal coleman until i get to almost 180 then i put it down behind me to support my (considerable) bulk and bring it back round. does this method have any serious drawbacks?

i tend to fall off when going backwards when i keep the hand in the air. does this mean i have a problem with technique?

just for reference i am using a lib tech 44 inch board indy 149's and 88a flashbacks. i know some people suggest using a short board but i cant for 3 reasons (and besides my pendulums are tight and when i get better i will be able to make them tighter.)

1)cant afford one at the moment.

2)i am 6 foot 3 and not flexable enough to use a double kick.

3) i hate popsickle sticks and pay out all my shortboarder friends. dont want to take the ridicule from them that no amount of explanation will fix.

i have searched the archives but am looking for more specific answers.

thanks.

Thanks hc.

I just spent an hour outside playing around on my short-skate, cleaning pebbles off an area of smooth asphalt, and trying to get a feel for pumping. I'm trying to use a more forward stance and I'm trying to convert my tick-tacks to nice smooth arcs. I'm definitely going to have to loosen the trucks (Indy) some.

Searching the archive gave me tons to read while I was working today. Lots of good stuff in there.

Still waiting for that longboard.
