frank, check my pumping page
www.geocities.com/sk8sanjose
but don't 'read' into the tips too much, a video is a beginner's best bet.

Frank, i'm not an expert at pumping, but i am getting better. my first experience pumping a skateboard was on a bank and that made sense to me and felt right. later i sort of transfered that feeling to the tops of hills i was bombing and realized that with my tight trucks i could pump up speed when i was going too fast to push. however, on flat land i had no idea what pumping was supposed to feel like until i started riding really loose trucks. i think you want more steering from the front truck than the rear but to start out and get the idea i'd suggest getting both pretty loose (maybe more in the front than the rear). the more loose your trucks are the easier you'll get going but to get more power you'll eventually have to tighten 'em down. ok, i'll get out of the way for the slalom folks to set us all straight. brian

I am sorry to ask a question that has probably been answered many times on this site;however,I would like to learn how to pump. Are there any concise explanations of how to do this technique? The search function here did not reveal any recent suggestions. I have been trying to do this on my Landy Chief with Randal 180s. How tight should the front truck vs. the rear truck be? Do other decks(like Loaded decks) or setups lend themselves better to learn pumping? Thanks.

yup, break the board into a slide by foot/body pressure, not by yanking. yank too hard, you will land on your ass quick.
forgot about this page, some good tips for technique stuff..

i pulled the board out from under me a fair bit when learning and still do sometimes when not thinking. i found with me i was not putting my weight on my hand on the ground but rather using the hand i was grabbing with to take the weight. try putting more pressure on the hand thats on the groung and not pulling on the rail of the board. with sliding gloves on the hand wont grab the ground which is what i was scared of when learning.

Gaz, do a search here for 'sliding' or something of the like and check out hc's website. ya know, wb, wheels, gloves, and surface all have a bit to do with whether or not you'll slide, but technique is the all-important thing. your research should turn up some things to try. practice. practice.
a hint: wear some sweats under an old pair of jeans that you don't plan on wearing to weddings or funerals and your arse won't hurt as much when it does more sliding than you planned.

As another sliding newbie. I am trying to coleman slide, holding the rail, but the board always flips out from under me just before breaking into a slide. I end up on my butt. Any ideas guys?

(in IE, copy the clip from you temp internet files, thx pierre!)

I'm new 2 longboarding and when i squat i tend to fall forward. Do i need a different stance as opposed to standing? Do i need to shift my weight differently?

If you want to see some 360 slide videos you can go to the gravity website at www.gravityboard.com click on videos and find the video with sergio yuppie. That's some crazy sliding.

hello hello, i'm new to sliding and i want to learn. yesterday i went out to a slalom session that had a nice, shallow hill. after the racing was over, i tried a few heelside slides with a rail grab. this seems to be the easiest slide for e to learn right now, but can anyone make a recommendation as to what kind of duro would be best for this?? if i had to guess, i would say i was going at about 20 or 25 mph when i slid. thanx

hc, thanx for the advice, the slides i am doing in that video are literally the *first* time had ever done 360 slides on a hill with any speed. i learned on slick smooth flat ground, which for anybody who wants to learn, slick smooth ground is the best place to learn on....i will try to post some more vids later tonight.

yes, scott, they do share similarities from what i have seen in the old 70's videos.
yup, i want to learn 360's and 540's on banks and transitions.
but we are talking about 360's with slider gloves going straght down the hill, not traversing.
anyways, watch david's clip or the bones brigade video, (featuring stacey) it should be obvious.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out what you guys mean by a 360 slide. I can see it on a bank, where front (heel) or back (toe) side a 360 slide keeps the entire board in rotation, but a 180/180 takes the tail around 180 and then the nose 180. Is there a difference on a hill? Traversing the hill it becomes a bank and I can see the 180/180 slide (what I think is being described below): does the 360 slide have both the nose and tail rotating simutaneously? The references in my mind are Tom Inouye's bank sequences, and Ty Page's (the freestyle guy sking his head in the Dogtown movie)standup sequences in Skateboarder.

daniel, repost,
Toeside slide:
well, not much to it, toe side carve, plop both hands down, keep both feet on toe edge, (your heels should be up) you should be in a push up position, if your ass is way up in the air, you will highside. Again, learn this on the flat.
Toeside pendulums: (i still need to learn this one, but i am almost there)
Once again, video is the key here. solidskate did have a good clip, but it's gone. the powell sliding footage have good examples.

david, noticed that too, not sure why you did that extra toe side 180,
i am trying to do 360's and come out with more speed, rather than slow to a crawl,
mess around with those standing slides, they are fun to do on the flats, be patient, they will come eventually (someone posted an mpeg a while back, standing 360's on the flat)
