knapp ditch
On 7/1/2002 willieleon wrote in from (162.93.nnn.nnn)

the knapp ditch is in the back of Knapp Ranch Park in west hills (though I still think of it as conaga park) it is off Valley circle. Should be easy enough to find the park through a search engine. The ditch is in the back of the park behind the upper baseball fields. I haven't been there in almost twenty years! Where did you see pics of it? Online somewhere?

Arbutus Ditch
On 6/30/2002 Cal Ripkin wrote in from (216.35.nnn.nnn)

Drove by the Arbutus Ditch on Friday. It's there and I hear some guys are fixing it up. You can see it when you exit I-95 on to 695 West. Look back just as before you merge on to 695. To get to the ditch, stay on 95 north and take the exit just past the 695 West exit like you are goin to the city of B-more. I can't recall the exit name but when you exit it will loop you round the right way. When you see a girl's high school on your right, take the left at the light. Pass the fire station and look for a left turn into an industrial park. The correct turn is just past a funky house on the left that is made partly of stone. I think there is a commuter parking lot across from the funky house. Weave your way to the back right of the industrial park as far as as you can go. Parking is in the far corner right next to the ditch. You will see an advert sign that you can see from the highway. There is a waist high chain link fence that has a break in it. You go down the short hill and boom you are there. Hope these direction don't suck too much. BTW, bring a broom for dirt and glass. The ditch has lights from 695.

Will be in Reno area in July. Would love to skate some ditches and slalom. Have family out there and will probably be out a few times. Have a brand new titanium cylinder in my tibia from a bad landing at a local Park and am itchin to try it out. I live outside Washington DC, I will be skating muy tranquillo with my new hardware on this trip but should be ready to rock by the next time out. Thanks for the help.

ABQ Outlaw Ditch Race
On 6/29/2002 K-LEE wrote in from (68.35.nnn.nnn)

Due to the 100+ degree weather here in the summer time, I've determined the best time to hold the Arroyo Bandito race would be sometime in September/October. Then we could skate all day and the sun wouldn't be chasing us out of the ditch by 10am. So, anyone who is interested in coming out to the Land of Entrapment this fall for the outlaw ditch race, let me know what your schedules are like around that time so I can start nailing down somekind of tentative date. Thanks.

Thanks for the info on Pot Springs, bro. There's no decent ditch in York, PA to skate.I've looked everywhere and asked every last skater. I looked at the ditch they did mention and it's a terrible. It's like a 1' high bank(abrupt)on one side and about 2 yards of flat seperating the other 1" high(abrupt)bank. No soul to it unless your into gnar-gnar hessian sessions.

hey, anyone know of any ditches here in Salt Lake? i have looked for em, but all of them have water. i have tried to look at watershed maps, but they didn't help at all. i am thinking west jordan or something would have a couple, but i;m not all that familiar with that area.

Jesus H Christ on a popsicle stick himself will be there. For the love of God when and where K Lee? How far is ABQ. from say Tijuana? My plans just changed, "gotta make a little detour baby, this won't take long. Just gotta stop in at ABQ." If you have an outlaw downhill slalom wild horses with raging woodies couldn't keep me away! That looks like heaven on earth. Thanks for tweaking my whole day, how I am I supposed to work after viewing that. I've wasted enough time on this website while at work. Jimmy Savage

Butter are you out there. I lost your number. I moved, but still live in Oaktown. I checked out Presidio parking lot one day, it looked kinda flat, but I didn't skate it,didn't have my board. Is it fun?
Dan in D.C. Congrats on getting hitched. Done any skating lately?
Wondering if anyone has done any downhilling in Baja. I was down there at New Years and found some incredible hills for skating. The surface is perfectly smooth at alotta places and the rolling hills are sweet. Steeps followed by uphills to slow you down. if you time it right traffic isn't much of a problem. Often you can see for miles so you know. The one hill I remember riding goes into a town called Camalu. Oh it is a sweet run!! The locals would come running to the street to watch. They honked horns and laughed,it was hysterical. I'm leaving this weekend for another trip. 2 weeks of surfing and skating....I know y'all are green with envy. I'll get good directions /landmarks etc. where the sweetest runs are found. Has anyone by chance skated Baja before got any last minute tips or best kept secrets. Californians hear me now....Baja is a sweet destination for downhilling, ya just gotta get in there aways past Ensenada and all that crap. I'm a ghost..........Jimmy Savage

I-5 ditch
On 6/26/2002 Mario wrote in from (148.87.nnn.nnn)

Ben, thanks, that sounds like the one. You can see it from the freeway going north on I-5, it's just on the right side of the road before the Stockdale exit. I guess you just park on the side of the road and hop over the wire fence, yes? I'm going to San Diego this weekend, I'll try and skate the ditch on the way back up. Also, I've stopped in Los Banos and skated their park, but I didn't like it much: very slippery, tight and kinked transitions.

I-5 ditch
On 6/26/2002 Ben wrote in from (4.41.nnn.nnn)

Mario- I don't know about the ditch that you asked about but there is a ditch just east of the <5> thats been skated for years. I have lived in both L.A. and S.J. and have many friends in both areas so I've done much traveling back & forth with crews of skaters. The ditch that I'm talking about is right next to the freeway, not hard to see so it's probably not the one you mean but it's about half way between the grapevine and the <152> at Los Banos. We would often stop and session it for a mid-drive break. Just east of the <5>. We would simply park on the shoulder of the freeway and hope for no cops- they never came.

Baltimore, MD ditches?

I have directions to the Pot Springs ditch and have been leary to check it out because I've heard it "might" be a bust.Well-to-do neighborhood, etc. I've also been reading about the Artubus ditch near Landsdowne but I've never seen it before. If anyone has any info on some of these jems, orient yourself to a map and look at York, PA(dirt ditchland) and please give me directions to any decent ditches in the Baltimore area. Wouldn't mind meeting ya there for a sesh. Thanks!

Stockdale California?
On 6/26/2002 Mario wrote in from (148.87.nnn.nnn)

I'm in the SF Bay Area and I drive to LA every once in a while on I-5. Which is a pity, because there aren't any skateboard parks worth visiting on that lonely stretch of road between Los Banos and Grapevine. But I saw a ditch at the Stockdale exit that looks like it's been skated, but there' doesn't seem to be a road to get there. Actually, it looks more like a watering hole for cattle than a ditch, but whatever. And from the highway it's hard to see if it's even skate-worthy. Does anyone know about this Stockdale ditch? Do you have to jump the barbed wire to get in, or is there a (dirt) road to get there?

K Lee, Chris Chaput might have some good ideas regarding the race course/cone set up, timing, push starts from the flats or dropping in from a desired location. There are many options.

ABQ ditchland
On 6/23/2002 Ben wrote in from (4.41.nnn.nnn)

Yeh I recognize that ditch from @ ten years ago. Reese Simpson & I traveled thru Albuquerque and a local took us to some of the numerous ditches. I couldn't believe it & I've told everyone ever since that Albuquerque is the ditch capitol of the U.S.. If that's the same ditch I remember it to be endless and smoother that any ditch I'd ever seen- the bottom actually had a little tranny unlike most others. There was also another ditch that I remember which was much deeper and had a spine where two ditches joined together. A banked slalom race in Albuquerque does seem like destiny. Your'e stoked.

Ditch race
On 6/21/2002 K-LEE wrote in from (68.35.nnn.nnn)

So, let's say THEORETICALLY that I've decided I absolutely must host a race in a ditch this Fall sometime. I need input and ideas. What kind of cone spacing is usually used on a banked slalom course? What day of the week would it be best to hold one on? Would anyone mind if we used a stopwatch/walkie talkie timing system? I'd hate to have to gather up miles of wire when (God forbid) everyone else is jetting when the man shows up. How do you get the cones to stick to the wall? Olson once suggested to me to use some kind of putty, would that potentially get caught/gunked up in your wheel? What about an ANTI-slalom race, where you have to knock down as many cones as you can and be the fastest? I can't figure out how to hold a dual race without the racers crashing into each other. My old raver days have helped me to decide how to throw this thing AND invite some of the locals too. I was worried about putting up flyers in the local shops and such for obvious reasons. I'd like to get as many local longboarder types involved, and I'm obviously the only computer literate longboarder in ABQ (Sharon uses my computer). So, I'm gonna start handing out flyers with a date and a phone number to anyone who rips the ditch over the next few months or whatever. What about a date? I'm thinking, late September/early October is prime skating weather here in the desert. The sun won't be chasing us out of the ditch by 10am (happened today, 98 degrees baby!) So, let the ideas flow! I'm all for organizing/being responsible for this thing. Now I just need your input. Keep in mind that it's about as outlaw as it gets, but the skating will be TOP NOTCH, I guarantee. Hit me.

K-LEE, you should start up a 'ditch-skaters bed and breakfast'
at your house. Set up a link where we can make reservations to visit.
Inviting people to a bust, though, hmmm . . .
Ah, to hell with it, I'll take my chances to be able to glide and
slide down that sweet bitch (I mean, ditch).
Gotta get the map out now, calculate how many tanks of gas I'll need.
