Between me and you longboarders, if I didn't already know all these freestyle tricks, I would only be riding longboards. I've been daydreaming all day about that slopestyle thing at La Costa. Downhill freestyle. So cool.

Here's my take on the "manual".
In the late 1980s, I used to hear a frontside roll-out/in in which you hold the wheelie (on vert or a mini ramp) called a "manual". Not sure why they called 'em that, but with a pretty high degree of certainty, I can tell you that is where it came from.
As street skating and ollies became more popular, I remember people doing "ollie manuals" on the street. This usually involved ollieing up a curb, holding a frontside wheelie, and then coming back off the curb. Like so many moves, this was a street-based imitation of a vert trick.
As street skating took over, and civilization fell into ruin, young primates began to lose their linguistic and logical thinking skills. The term "manual" came to be used for any wheelie manuver.
I've also seen, in a skate mag, multiple 360s referred to as "manual spins" or "1-footed manual spins". yikes.

I can possibly understand that when you Ollie into a wheelie you might want to call it something other than an "Ollie to wheelie", but why "manual" and when did it become the generic for all wheelies?
why didn't they call it an "automatic"?
aren't all tricks manual? I have yet to find a board that will do anything automatic, other than pitch me off, so everthing is manual, isn't that common knowledge?
Something needs to done about this.
BTW I have a nice video clip of Sturhann doing a "hang 5 nose manual" on a 57" Ed Econ.

I don't know how many times I've been at a skatepark messing around doing freestyle, and after doing a few 360s I'll hear "Hey, that guy just did manual rotations", or "He just did a ...let's see... an 1,800..."

For you freestylers, an old Kevin Harris deck with lots of stuff just came up on eBay, comes with Tracker freestyle trucks and Gullwing fresstyle trucks and some wheels, board looks real good, with a Buy it Now of 130 pounds, not bad thats around 180 bucks. No, its not mine.

I don't have the piroette up.
These days it would probably be called a "360 body varial", since piroette sounds a bit sissy. You just jump, do a 360 with your body, and land on the board. Harder than it sounds. People used to do oldschool piroette kickflips too.
If you do it while keeping the toes of one foot on the board (spinning on the toes and ball of your foot) its called a toe spin.

I've seen this already stated before, but it went unanswered, so I'll bring it up again for me and the other guy. Being a young buck, I see the names of the tricks that you talk about, but have no idea what they actually look like. I think it would be fantastic if someone would post some descriptions or even pictures so we beginners could know what we are trying to emulate. Thank you.

I'm not sure, but I think that Gelfand may have already been riding for Powell by the time that Mullen started skating. In the late 70s, Mullen rode for Walker, and not only did he dominate freestyle (at least in his age group) back then, but he also raced slalom. An old Walker ad from has Mullen's results from the '79 Clearwater Pro/Am, and shows him winning 1st not only in freestyle, but also dual slalom AND giant slalom...

The kickflip was invented by Curt Lindgren (try getting the groms at the local park to believe that one!), back around '75. Rodney Mullen created (or at least gets credit for) the "magic flip", which later took the name from Lindgren's move...

That would ad credibility to what I was saying. Not too many florida skaters got the hype like the cali boys but Rodney was a ratlander with definite street style. I think he was on a local team with Alan before hooking up with Powell but not sure.

One of my first images of skateboarding was what seemed to be a Freeformer Team demo outside a grocery store in Antioch, IL. There was one guy in particular that jumped grocery store carts and pretty much skated obstacle around him. I think it was Ty Page. Dan Gesmer by happenstance found out that an acquaintance was a close friend of Ty's family and actually got his home number from Ty's dad...

Ty Paige was on the Freeformer team (not the answer to "who was the guy to do the first kickflip") and was a good freestyler, vert skater and skatecar downhill racer. He was a great skater who didn't get the "hero status" probably based on the fact that he was on the Freeformer team. They made everyone wear totally lame cordinated uniforms, and had some of the cheapest toy decks thus spoiling the image of anyone who was on the team.
He invented the "Ty slide", I think the "Rock walk", and was known for riding off of things, tables, trucks etc.
During the pig board days he started his own line of decks called Ty Sticks.
I have tried to hunt him down but have had no luck.

I wouldn`t be surprised if a cali boy takes credit for it but I`d have to believe it originated down in the Ratlands (south florida). I had this move back in `76 that started from a 360% spin and lift the board up in the air. At first I could only bust a 180% on this manuever but after long hours of practice, I finally started landing the 360%. Differance from the kickflip is not only was my board spinning but so was I.
Then a local skatepark opened that year in Hollywood called Skateboard USA. Under the ramp to the main bowl was a little bowl with lots of places to roll in. On hot summer days, this was the place to be to escape the heat. Soon this other kid started doing my move but he one-upped me and took it to the vert.
Yup, we`re talking about Alan Gelfand, my fellow rat. And the move is his...OLLIE and I respect him for not only pulling off the baddest trick but also revolutionizing skateboard too.
Others where doing tricks along the same lines too. That`s why I`d have to believe the new school kick flip had to originate fron down here. Just a natural progression of things.
And speaking of Alan, he and I are still buds and for what he`s done, he doesn`t have a big head. Just another local rat.

Jeremy - I think alot of the old freestyle guys used a flat board (most were homemade), tracker 1/2 tracks and HARD and SMALL wheels.
