thanks msk, that collection is so cool! the are ads are great but you can't really read the articles, bummer, i really wanted to read this one by russ howell about freestyle tricks and it has a picture of the runs he did in some of the championships he won. that collection makes me want to go skate. freestyle is the best!

Happy Anniversery!
It was one year ago tonight that 13 of us skated in
Dr. Bill Robinson's World Freestyle Skateboard
Championship/Reunion in San Francisco. That event
marked the beginning of the freestyle revival. We are
back and we are movin' on up!
See you at this years World Flatland Freestyle Skateboard Championship in Johnson City NY
on Dec. 1st and 2nd.
I will be at La Costa for the races and banked event
and also at the dinner the night beforeif any of you would like to talk about the revival of some California
freestyle classics like the Cow Palace and Oceanside.

Freestyle is coming back THPS3, Globe Opinion video (Rodneys part) are taking it to the mainstream and the WFSA the FSOA the Barrio Games and all the other promoters and skaters of Freestyle are making it happen in every city and town lets make the best of this time anew age in Freestyle is upon us and for it to blossom we need everyone to have and do there part by coming to Comps, putting on demos, skating with everyone and teachng those who want to learn. It can happen but it depends on all of us. Hope to see you all in the future especially at the Championships. Late

Okay, now that the new PlayStation Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 game is out, I can give you all the scoop. Several weeks ago, I met up with Rodney Mullen here in Denver and gave him a copy of my "Wheelin' in the Years - Part 1" movie. He was really greatful and I informed him of all the efforts, so many of us have been working on the last couple of years to promote Freestyle. He seemed stunned to hear how many of us were really still into Freestyle. For those of you that don't know me, I competed in most of the contests from 1981, until the Freestyle contests stopped in 1990-91. I've been skating for 26 years now. Anyways, Rodney took the video to PlayStation and the game designers contacted me. I agreed to donate any of the video footage they wanted. Well, the game was just released and I have been receiving positive feedback already! Basically, if you play the Rodney Mullen portion of the game and achieve a bonus, you will see a video segment of Rodney skating Freestyle at the San Francisco contest in 1988, or the Oceanside Championships in 1986. Even if only 1% of the millions of people that will play the game get hooked on learning more flatland skateboarding, I am hoping that this may in some way help to propel a new Renaissance in Freestyle skateboarding.
Rodney also mentioned that he has been receiving many requests for more Freestyle footage in his videos. He mentioned that he skates 50% Freestyle and 50% Streetstyle in the new Globe video, so check it out!

Many of us will be competing in the New York Freestyle Championships the beginning of December. Contact me or A.J. Kohn for more information.

I'm a 'new generation skater' and i have discovered freestyle skateboarding! I find that it is possible to do freestyle tricks on almost any board! I have a 7.5 inch wide deck and can do many freestyle tricks that alot of people seem to think aren't possible on these boards!
I've been skating for 11 months and improve noticeably, every day! When you skate you need to analyse in your head what you are doing. It helps to ask people what you are doing right! Show them where you are and they might be able to help! Don't worry about looking good. You will never look good until you start to land tricks consistantly and it takes alot of thought and time. You will find that you don't practice some tricks and you may loose them, it just takes time to get them back. I'm 15 and skateboarding in England, there are more skaters than ever. Don't start to think that you are better than anyone, there is always someone better than you!

I've got a story for everyone. I'm almost 32 and have been Freestyling for as long as I can remember. I just recently switched from the old shape to a "new school" shape, I find that because it is alittle longer that the old shape its easier to preform tricks on. Anyways, I was really feeling it so I went down to the local skatepark and began to skate.
I'm a big fan of the really old Freestyle tricks: endos, nose wheelies (one footed is my favorite), 360's (one footed on those are great fun, too), moon-walks, duck-walks, and some of my newer ones like caspers and rail stuff, oh yeah, and crazy fast footwork. Back to the story, some of the kids notice my spinning and came to watch, they were all pretty amazed except this one kid. I finnished off about five 360's on my first attempt then that one grommet came up to me and said, "What are you doing, why don't you go grind on the ledge?" I responded, "Its called freestyle and the reason I'm not grinding the ledge is because I don't not how I frankly, do not have the urge to learn..."
He kind of laughed at me because I had no grinding ability then said "Oh yeah, Freestyle, I'm really good at that" and probably did one of the uglyist 50/50 casper I've ever seen in my whole skating days. I just looked at him then rolled away and busted an old school kick-flip 180 right in his face, Freestyle that, chump...

Neil, it's probably been the same story throughout most of our skating careers. The guys who never quit have probably always been quetioned or look at in a different light.
It's been 11 years since my last pro Slalom race (90 PSL 1rst Place) and that had been my 1rst race since the Expo 86 comp.
I've since added 6 surgeries included back to back (heart Surgeries) 6 days appart in '99, so you just imagine the types criticism and crazied looks I'm getting up here in Canada where we seen snow flakes 3 times so far.
Anyways, I'll see you at La Costa in a few weeks. Skate for yourself and enjoy the love, peace and tranquility it brings to you. Peace

Regarding age:
When I first started skating at 15 in 1976, most skaters were 10 or 12 and people criticised me for being too old for kid's toys.
When I was skating in the mid-80s in my mid-20s, most skaters were high school kids and people criticised me for being too old for these teenage activities.
Now I'm 40 and still skating and many of the active skaters are in their early 20s. I don't get much flak, in fact I get a lot of genuine interest in my longboard and slalom rigs.
What's my point? I guess same as Henry's. It's just been interesting to always be the oldest skater around no matter how old I've been :)

For you hard core Brian Martin fans, I have a scan of
a full page ad of his from a 1986 Freestylin' magazine.
I also have a scan of the 1977 Oceanside Skateboard
Contest flyer...an interesting document because the
rules allow you to use a ramp as a prop in your run
and the graphic is a line drawing of a guy in fill gear doing a tail tap! My son Rob won the 7 and under
division that year....any way, if you would like me to email you a jpeg of these scans, just let me know.
Rocco has a house on Catalina and also in Hermosa
and can be seen riding his bike down to the pier on Sundays to get the paper.
How are things shaping up for La Costa?
Will there be an area for kids to skate? I will be bringing my 12 year old grandson.

Hey Nada Ollie,
The newschool boards are totally optimized for doing ollies, so your 9" wide soft-wheeled cruiser will not ollie as well as those boards.
That being said, ollies and ollie kickflips CAN be done on just about any board. Fletcher, the kid on my site, can do ollie kickflips on my 40" Comet Kicktail with 180mm Randal trucks and 66mm wheels! And he's less than 5 feet tall!
The latest issue of International Longboarder (available on the web at www.longboardermag.com)has a pretty good tip on the ollie kickflip by Yancy Meyer.

Okay, this sounds stupid, but I'm an old freestyler from
and now, at age 36 I'm back at the local
public park, but I only have one question: Why can every kid do a ollie kick-flip, and I can't? I'm embarrassed to do a 'normal' kick-flip, ie, hook the board with your foot, even though I used to have double flips down (hey, it's bad enough that I'm old...) I'd do finger-flips, but my back! Hand me a cane... I bought a 9" wide board with 74mm wheels, not teeny-tiny ones, how much of an advantage are the small wheels in doing ollies? Any good links to ollie lessons? What's 'the trick'? No one I ask can articulate what they're doing... ps. are there any non-concave freestyle boards with rockers being sold??? What are freestylers riding these days as far as typical setup?

I usually do the skiing/water skiing comparison thing too, people seem to gewt it then.
When I talk about a contest I went to or saw on TV, much the same way the other people at work talk about the football game or basketball game, They think it's weird. I don't surf, haven't surfed in 13 years, but read Longboard, Surfers Journal, and sometimes Surfer. I'm into the sports and the people ionvolved. It never seems to equate to others passions for mainstream team sports.
Who cares about Michael Jordon spinning a 360 before he dunks. I saw Tony Hawk spin a 900, 15' in the air and land on a skateboard.

furthering Henry's explanation as to why we still skate at 40+ years, I always draw the comparison to skiing and surfing where "older" participants are common. When people start to view skateboarding as they do skiing (or possibly snowbarding) they understand that it is a sport and a behavior that is not based on age.
