99 vs 101

Here's the response I got from Powell in regards to their 101A wheels:
"You are correct in saying that the A scale stops at a 100. We know our wheels are 101A by the fact of the other scales to measure it on. 101A has been around for years, and is kept that way to keep from confusing customers by having a 99A then a 81B.
It is easier for the consumer to be able compare to another specific hardness within the same range.
The difference between the 99 and 101 is barely noticeable. If you are skating on a pretty smoother surface, the harder the better. They'll last longer and roll faster as well. Most people can't tell the difference, but some of us who try everything can tell for sure. I would base my decision on the usual surface in which I would skate upon."

Although technically not possible, there are wheels marked as high 103A. Somebody in marketing decided that more than one durometer scale would just confuse skaters, they where likely right.

ok you DON't GET 101a! IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE the durometer only goes up to 100a. and in general if it's above 95a it's hard to tell the difference in hardness while riding 100a is the same hardness as a diamond(thats what the duro would read if it smacked a diamond) anything above 85a is considred "sliding material" or "potential flat spot energy" in my book unless setup on a kickflipper where it's considered "burning material"

The A scale only goes up to 100 (or 99, I can't remember exactly). But as far as Powell/Bones goes, the 101 is harder than the 99, even though the 101 is an invalid number on the A scale. But wether you can tell the difference or not would be hard to say, as they are both extremely hard.
The D scale is a more accurate scale that measures beyond 99A. You can get a good explanation of it all at http://www.darkstarwheels.com. Just click on "durometer info".

OK, here's a question requiring some kind of techy answer. How much different will a 99a wheel seem on vert compared to a 101a wheel? I currently have a set of dog bones wheels (I think 62mm, but definitely 101a) on my numbchuck. I've noticed that they are VERY slippery on a beat-up wooden half-pipe. They are getting older, and so I'm thinking about getting something along the hardness of 99a.
So, that's question numero uno. Is a 99a wheel much softer/slower than a 99a wheel?
Question 2 is, I've started noticing some other wheels in the CCS catalog my kids get that are listed as "d" durometer (like in the 70's, and 80's). Now, I know these are thrasher vert/street wheels, so they have to be hard, right?

Martin-
Those wheels are 98A, not 89A. They were street/vert wheels that came out in the late 80s/early 90s, IIRC. Not slalom wheels.

Well, I wanted to be able to use my N-Gens on Seismic (G-Truck) 110's. So Chris Chaput kindly let me use his lathe and I cut the back of a set completely flush with the rear bearings. Initial cruising felt good, quicker reacting, more nimble. A quick couple of runs through 5ft, 5ft with 1 ft offsets (on my inverted 25" G&S Steve Cathey), 6ft and 6ft with 1-1.5ft offsets confirmed that they are now a WICKED TS wheel! Still grippy and I think a little faster in a straight line too. This was with 2 on the back...I'm saving the others. I was on a Comet narrow for the 6ft stuff(just like my old Santa Cruz Hutson, but with more rebound) with a 100mm G-Truck(Tracker copy) up front, the G-Truck/Seismic in the rear. Both had the Indiana wedges, thin side forward. I'll bring them to Da Farm if anyone wants a try.
Martin.

This is a question rather than a review.... Does anyone know anything about these wheels? They are v.narrow with a shape EXACTLY like the V-12's except its half the width! They are lemon yellow.... Its just I have found a UK dealer who has...Are you sitting down....872 in his warehouse!

The 85mm Classics are 80a not 85a, that's a typo, sorry. I'm having it fixed.
We are making all these new wheels right now and will be available soon. I'll let you know when and where. Hang Tight!
Thanks,

Sorry if I dissed Daryl. To me the board looks like a kickflipper. With the progression of skate equipment today, you`d think a company like Kryptonics would spead an altruistic image of the sport. Either a guy in leathers doing downhill speedboarding (more mano a sport than I can handle) or a guy slicing cones on one of the current rides (Comet, Turner, ROE, etc,,). It always inspired me to buy new equipment as youngster reading those old Skateboarder mags.
Go to the Krypto banner above and look in the Downhill section and read the caption under the board "The Genuine">
Is that an image we need to promote? I think not...

DOH!!, go buy "the monkey" at www.solidskate.com. it has plenty of darrly "the flying hawiian" doing some INSANE slides, all standing up and on that "kickflipper"
although in most of the videos i've seen of darrly, he barely ever wears pads........ david

Quote from mikez: "however the new kryp 85mm seem a bit hard for speed If I was gonna buy I'm I'd buy em for sliding not speed"
I am stupid. forgive me. But I am going to use common sense and say that the reson they chose 85A for 85mm wheels is because the wheels probably have a greater contact patch, thus more grip, over a smaller wheel. So to compensate for the more contact patch, they made the wheel a little harder. I think they wanted the wheel to be a little slidey, if it wasnt, it would be scary as hell.

it not a kickflipper it's 39.5 inches long. it resembles a kick flipper.DOH!, that "kickflipper" will most likely stand up slide further than you can colemans slide! sheesh however the new kryp 85mm seem a bit hard for speed If I was gonna buy I'm I'd buy em for sliding not speed
