It depends on what wheels size you are using. You dont want your wheels to close together because they can rub each other in turns, or even lock up in a turn. But you want the axles as close as possible because the further apart they are the more they work against each other. I like to have about 1/4" clearance between wheels.
So i guess the secret voodoo measurement is
(wheel dia) + .250 = axle distance

If you're just starting out, on a budget and have access to some tools and parts:

1. Get 3 Randal R-II 180mm trucks (dual front).
2. Replace the kingpins with longer grade 8 bolts.
3. Replace the cushions with black rubber cylindrical ones found in the Downhill trucks.

If you can, replace the axles with stronger ones right away or as soon as you bend them.

These work great and are cheap!

Hi there guys,

I am drawing the plans for my first luge, and has come to the trucks part, and I am stuck. Hope you guys can help me out, since there's no other lugers in sweden (that I know of, anyway).

First thing is, should I have one or two front trucks, I am a heavy beast, 90+kilos, which, as I see it, implies double front trucks. If that's what I need, how much different should the kingpin angle be on the front truks? And also, how big should the height-difference be? Is the height-difference in the front-trucks depending on the flex in the luge, or how does the rear front truck manage to grip the surface when mounted above the front front truck.

Randalls or z-rollers? Since I am totally new to this whole luge thing, I don't have a clue as to which trucks to use. Being a student and all that I would much rather prefere the z-rollers, but it seems like most people uses randalls. And, if randalls is the ones, what angle do you recommend? I am planning to build a rather short and turny luge, but I would like to be able to reach max speed in all courses without the wobble.

Thanks for your help, and a wicked foum!
cheers, anders österling

Wild Fro Thanks to all who attended "FunDay"

Guys and Gals:

From Wild Fro, Steve, Marilyn, Jennifer, David and Guy our sincere thanks for you making our 3rd Annual "FunDay" the best ever.

Our thanks to all the great sponsors: Red Bull, Purple Skunk, Randal Design, Moe Speed, Inc., Xtreme Wheelz, Gravity Publishing, Gargoyle Composites and Streetluge.net.

This "FunDay" we had 24 luge, 3 Stanup, 2 Inline and 2 "FlowFab" riders, all tolled 31 Guys and Gals had a great time.

The biggest load going up the road had 18 riders in and on the pickup with the station wagon following with a load. It was not uncommon to have 10-12 luge riders on the road at one time followed by inline and or standup.

The largest group of luges that came down on one run was 15. Fastest riders stopped at very end of brake area, the next fastest stopped a ways back from them, the third fastest stopped a little shorter and the last group of riders stopped even further back.

Jay Farbman, a professional freelance photograper, who had taken our street luge training only a short time before was out riding with everyone with a DV camera strapped to one leg and still camera strapped to another. He has some freaken awesome footage with incredible sound (I saw and heard a small segemnt out at the road) and stills.

The Lancour brothers, WeFilmU, were out with their DV lipstick camera system. If I'm not mistaken they strapped the system on Jeff Shonzeit. They also must have some awesome footage.

Andy Gatley took a page from Olivera Wagner's book of "FunDay" 2001....And the Winner is...Andy Gatley. Andy did what Olivera did last year, he purchased 50 extra drawing tickets and it really paid off.

The luges were running in the 70's (it was not a very fast day with the winds). I did not see it myself, but I was told that someone was clocked at 74+ with the GPS. If that rider was on the road with Dave Auld, Dave had to really be smoking. Dave was the first down the hill everytime I saw them.

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and had Fun!!!!.

Thanks again.

Duane, An 8" hanger width is great when you have centerset wheels on "mega-longboard" or speedboard that is 11" to 12" wide. The Randal luge truck is a good width but you're right, the floating axle is overkill for what we really want. Do you remember Max? 48" long by 12" wide with luge trucks and 92mm wheels...

Yep, Chris, that would be step 1. To see steps 2,3, and 4, just mail 'em and see what happens ! Its you damn center-set wheels that make 200mm hangers necessary anyway :)

Here are the unofficial results of the Gravity Games 6-man and 4-Man Streetluge events.

6-Man
-----
1. Dave Rogers
2. Mike McIntyre
3. John Rogers

4-Man
-----
1. Mike McIntyre
2. John Rogers
3. Dave Rogers

From what I hear, there was any early morning stoppage and an afternoon break due to thunderstorms and tornado warnings. They completed all of the racing today. When it was all over, the Rogers Bros Team had swept the podium.

Mike McIntyre practices with Dave and John and Brent and Pam and Rob and Darren and Pat and Jeremy and Sasha and the rest of the Cheesegrater/Dump Road gang. I am so proud of these guys. I want to party with YOU!

While I'm not going to do the SF thing anytime soon, you can see why I sacrificed some handling precision on my chromy sled by adding huge, thick,Rubber risers between the sled and trucks. Shocks, anyone?

I would like to have (or purchase, very cheap) the busted spin axle hangers from the Big Air, or anywhere else for that matter. The red and silver ones in the lower right picture on the post below are what I am looking for. The center portion needs to be OK but I assume they all bend or break the same way. Will pay for the shipping to get them here. What am I up to ? Making 200mm non spin-axle trucks out of them. Yes I am serious.

California Championship Series 4
West LA College, 7/21/02

California Championship Series 4 brought out a good
field of racers for a fun day of racing under the wurm sun.
In stock gravity bike Tara Tapparo was the first woman

But Jason Johnson again prevailed, and then carried on to win the 3/4 fairing race, as well. In inline, Scott Peer took another win, with Rob and Warren besting Mark for the next podium spots. In buttboard Jason won yet again. Street luge had Marcus racing for his first time in years, and Bob Ozman in his first race since his injury. After 3 runs the group, and then in the tiebreaker Bob Ozman show winning form, teaming with Marcus to squeeze Jason out for the win.

They show it on Saturday at 2:00 in the morning (both PST AND EST) but call list that as being late "Friday Night". Now it appears that 2:00pm Saturday afternoon show is on waters sports (a different episode).

It's worth staying up for tonight.

Tom Mason, Lee Dansie, Sean Mallard, Pat Moody, Andy Lally, Chris Chaput, Erek Shaffer, Jeffrey Schonzeit, Denne Fox, Bazzel Baz...

There's going to be a lot of fresh meat (carnage) and two big air attempts for every rider. It should be another epic event.

If you haven't already seen it, 25 action packed minutes of footage will be shown on TNN this Saturday at 2:00pm (PST)in a series called "RE: The Evolution of Sport". The episode is entitled "Momentun" and it rocks. Highly recommended for thrill seekers and crash lovers. Killer coverage. See ya there!
