Nice score, Kate!
I just installed some 180mm Seismics on my 36" Afroman (park rig). Really, really turny trucks, so I may have to put some on my Comet longboard, too.
There's a Halloween contest/jam next weekend at the Boulder skatepark, btw...

So last Friday, I decided that I needed new trucks. I read all the posts about the best trucks for my Cosmic2, and went to All Boards on 30th & Arapaho in Boulder. And got wayyy hooked up.
I had my new Randall II's on and almost all adjusted when the president/inventor of Seismic trucks walked into the shop. So rather than Randall II, I now have sexy as hell Seismics, for the Randall price. Woah. And got an impromptu lesson on basics in the parking lot from the guy. Super rad. And I got new bearings too, so all I need now is new wheels, and I'll be totally set.
I made an extensive tour of Boulder with my friend Steve on the new trucks, and they are soooo wonderful. It's like having a totally new board, they're so sweet. And after eight or nine miles on Saturday, and only one fall resulting in a bruised palm (from the wristguard!), I think they're pretty well broken in.
I can't wait to do a night skate on these trucks. They're *silent*. If I thought it was quiet before, I may wonder if there's anyone else on the planet while I'm out there. And it'll be wonderful.
Peace...

Now for a geek trip..
h0dads been studying artificial intelligence..the class has been looking at expert systems that prescribe corrections for near/short sightedness etc. Incidentally, these things are also used to assess our credit ratings/limits...eeuw.
But there is hope; h0dad's taught his algorithm to prescribe a skateboard setup for a given riding style..better, much better.
Party on, take it easy

The other day my oldest daughter was going to go skating with her man. She has a couple of kickflipper boards herself, but asked me if she could use one of my decks.
I usually have a handful of pop-worth boards on hand and offered to put an extra together for her (I figured one of her girlfriends needed the ride)
But to my delight she said no, but that she would like to ride one of my longer boards with big soft wheels, the kind that don't stop when you hit rocks and that are smooth and quiet.
So I put together a bahne rocker, 150mm RII's, 60mm 78a no skoolz, and nmb bearings (not a rocket ship roller, but still decently fast)
That board is living with her now (good thing all the parts were spares!)
Her guy remarked about how fast that board was... but little does he know! I'll be setting up something a little faster for them to play with later... I figure some flashbacks and ceramics will help fill their new found need for speed and a peaceful ride! HR

samantha, I am a geezer who sometimes skates with younger kids. I usually ride a longboard, and even my "shortboard" is longer than most of the new school stuff. In answer to your question, most of the kids I see skating are so focused on doing tricks that that is all they know. They see my longboard as useless because it cannot be ollied or kickflipped. They don't see cross-stepping or noseriding as being tricks. They probably see me as someone who's trying to be hip (ie: like them - skating), but is too old to really do it right (ie: their way - doing tricks). What I see in most of them is the frustration of not being able to land whatever trick they are currently obsessed with, and no clue as to how to carve or flow down a hill. Most of these kids have to carry their boards to a spot and then start skating because their wheel bearings are so crappy, their wheels are too small and hard to go anywhere, and their trucks are so tight they can't turn. I have made every effort to enlighten some of them to carving and surf-style skating, and some have taken to it, but most keep right on flipping and ollieing (and cussing their failures). So, I imagine their feelings towards me are about the same as mine towards them: their idea of 'what skateboard is' does not agree with mine. It's not like a bad vibe or anything, it's more that we're after two different kinds of stimulation, and we're using different types of boards to arrive at it. To me, speed, flow, and style are much more enjoyable than landing a kickflip while barely rolling once every 30 tries. But, hey, I'm a geezer! -Mark Colden Dallas, TX

I've asked the same question before and still not sure how to answer it. Of course it will differ between individuals so there will be no solid answer. By the way, what is a "normal" skateboard? I consider my 45" soulride normal.
For board sports in general, some people have this notion of hierarchy, some better and more prestigious than others. With more people crossing over, I say it's all different branches to the same tree.
Already too much attention to this topic. My suggestion: forget about and enJoy the ride.

Shiny detailed decks consume my energies as they dance before my eyes... brightly colored and sensuously curved...
but alas, I shall never ride any of them... all gleaming with the artisans touch... his name, signed on the wood, the soul, the tree at the heart. All gone off to far away places, and with each, a piece of the creator.
I carve for myself agin, and I'll build myself a ride to reward myself for this talent, this craft and these efforts.
I'll ride it to give thanks... and my spirit will soar on smooth ground.

Sam: I enjoy seeing females out there skating and if that guy you like is acting wierd after seeing you carving it up, well, then he is not your soul mate. Keep on soulriding, you'll find someone who likes you for who you are. Leslie: I've ridden both Randall 150s on my Bozi Mad Bomber II and the new metal Seismics(I believe they were the 180s)....anyways, I like them both very much but I can generate more speed(pump) on rougher pavement with the seismics than with the Randalls. I love the Randall 180s on my 57"Gravity Ed Economy Bank Rider....you cannot go wrong with either trucks.....get some Flashbacks, Avalons or Avilas too for a fun soulful ride....did someone say SWEET SET UP?! Let me know what you decide.

We need more females on skateboards, whether it's longboard, shortboard, contest, or just for fun. Any guy who doesn't support you girls out there is a kook. Don't concern yourself with what other people think, just ride and enjoy the feeling. It's not about who can do this or that trick, or who's "best", it's about having fun and not being negative towards others. Negative people suck.

Another story about Civ's favorite spot.
Civ left a post about a crazy hill in Dundas down the Niagra escarpment. This is how fast that hill is. A few buddies and I were riding the hill one crazy guy (let's name him cam) said that we should go down the hill and he'd catch up to us, (we also had a big truck to follow us and pick us up) We started down the hill got 3/4s of the way down and was wondering were cam is the people in the truck said we were doing 65km/h at the time. Out of nowhere Cam flew by the truck and the longboarders and kept going out of sight, we can only asume that he was 75km/hr plus. That hill rocks its super fast and super long, plus they just re-paved the whole thing. If your ever in the Burlington/hamilton area of ontario give me a shout ( you won't be dissapointed).
