I think it's a matter of selecting the best technique for the moment. You have to recognize that sliding, even really controlled sliding means you arc across at least a half a lane to one lane of traffic. If you are going at a good clip, and have sliding wheels, slides can also go on for a surprisingly long distance. So this is not super great news for an "emergency stop" technique. If you are going down a four-laner and a trucks backs up into the middle of the road, or the busy intersection at the bottom of the hill turns red, by all means, slide.
This is not the best technique if there are other riders screaming down the hill, or say, if, like me, a van full of tourists is literally hanging on your a$$ down a one-lane big hill, honking, and then refusing to pass. Also not so great if you have to suddenly stop in a limited lane, like say, between traffic stopped at a light and oncoming turn traffic, or at a traffic accident, or mid-lane turn.
Don't get me wrong, I love my slides. It's just better to have more options than not for stopping at speed. Practice the slides, practice the footbraking.

My dismount technique: place back foot on the ground, and raise the front foot slightly off the deck, allowing it to roll forward. As mine has a tail, it hits my foot, stops the board, and with a quick press down the nose comes up in the air. my forward momentum turns into a step forward and catching the nose. smooth :) And yeah, as embarassing as it might sound, i do pay attention to getting this down smooth :)

can't remember the last time I saw a skateboards with brakes on. yeah I know about braketrucks, but how many pepople ride them?
sure there's no reason to pull a 360 at the light, especially if you have brakes, plus how many drivers or skaters know how to pull a 360? not the majority for sure. that doesn't make sliding less safe than footbraking.
what I'm talking here is emergency breaking, and there's no doubt that pulling a 360 will make you avoid an obstacle much easier, if you can do that.

IMHO, SLIDE! ill slide at any speed, but past 20 footbreaking gets extremely sketchy: save your shoes, impress the ladies

Nah, what he was saying was that you rarely see a person on a bike or in a car doing 360s.
A simple technique I read on this board hella years ago, but which I have used ever since, is as follows:
When you want to stop and pick up your board while looking really smooth, just put your front foot on the nose of the board in front of the wheels, then step off with the back foot. As the board's back end shoots up, just reach back and grab it with your "front foot" hand. Now you are standing still on two feet with your board in hand. Needless to say, don't do this dismount at speed.

yes but if you are sliding you need lots of wheels and a full lane of road and as efarpe said how many blokes bust emergency slides as the traffic light turns red while they are going 50mph + and they have a turnoff lane to slowdown in? sure foot braking is hard to learn but once you have it it is the best there is.

HC: Yes I have always found that the toeside slide/turn comes more natural for me. I'm having as big trouble with the frontside slide as others seem to have with the backside. I'm working hard at the frontside now, the backside might come more natural to me, but the frontside always seems to look so much better.

slideing words alot better vs. foot braking for stoping. if you wish to foot brake you need balance with just one foot on your board. sliding is way more fun and much much safer, like the other dude said. SLIDE

I'm just learning proper sliding and not much of a footbreaker either, but isn't sliding supposed to be a 360, in the same lane? if you end up in the other lane aren't you just doing a big turn?
yes sliding is hard to perfect, but I just can't see how foot breaking can stop you faster than sliding. just like with a car or a bike, when you want to stop fast to avoid an obstacle you do a 360.

I think good footbraking has a huge advantage over sliding in that you do not slide accross the entire lane and I can stop faster at high speed footbraking than pretty much every slider I have ever ridden with, Although sliding can be used mid corner and is a lot more fun than footbraking, foot braking is more controlled and reliable. I personally think it best if you learn to footbrake first.

only two 'easy' ways are footbraking and sliding with slider gloves. Learn both, but IMO sliding holds a distinct advantage from the safety perspective. (low impact when one mess up)
footbrake requires more balance (which often the newbies don't have). Those who are good at it can do impressive high speed footbrakes. But when they mess up, it's usually results in a flying superman.
I learned sliding first from watching cliff and jm. then slalom came along, and i learned footbraking. But for general hill riding, i almost always slide. Much lower risk and i can pull slides at speeds that i wouldn't dare footbrake.
anyways, read up lots of info on my sliding page.

Just wanted to say thanks to hc and the others who helped me out with some tips on pendulum slides. I have now got the backside pendulum down pretty good. It was no problem on harder wheels, but on my ABEC11 flywheels I just needed loads of speed before it worked out OK. Just give me the summer and I'll release a movie of the swedish Sergio Yuppie :D Well now I'm off to learn frontside and coleman slides aswell.

i highly suggest buying the powell peralta 'future primitive' video. this is one with 2 guys going down a curvy road. you will see great closeups of pendulums, cliff slides. not sure it have 360's.
anybody learning sliding should see this.
