Where can I get a "lapper"?

Remeber those things called lappers? They were like a little wedge that helped you get over a curb. Getting over curbs on a longboard isn't easy. They doesn't ollie well (duh) and its difficult to get your foot on the nose and tail at the same time (major split) to pop it over.
I remember three different kinds of lappers, one was a plastic triangle (yuck). Another was strip of nylon that attached to the truck mounting bolts and was called "The Bird" because it looked like someone giving the finger. The other one was from '79 I think and I forgot the name. It replaced the top washer on the kingpin and screwed into the deck. This is the one I want. Anybody seen anything like this still being made?

The trucks have 2 additional center wheels which rotate 360 degrees on casters, and their height (distance from the board) can be adjusted. In order to attain the sliding/spinning feel, they are set closer to the ground (farther away from the board) than the 4 outer wheels. This enables the rider to "tilt" the board back and forth, lifting the toeside or heelside outer wheels off the ground. When you're riding, if you execute a toeside turn and unweight the outer wheels on the heelside (downhill) edge by placing your weight on the toeside edge, the center wheels kick in, allowing you to slide sideways and control your speed by dragging the outer toeside wheels, just like sliding turns on a snowboard. It's just the opposite for the heelside turn. Just make sure you keep your outer downhill wheels off the ground, or you can experience an asphalt faceplant. Check out their description and video clips at the Freebord website -- they're much better at explaining it than I! Hope this helps somewhat.

Albert,
I believe you're thinking of the trucks on the Freebord (see links section on this site). I just got one a few weeks ago, and the ride is awesome; very different from (and a nice compliment to) a conventional longboard. Any of you who snowboard or would like to see what the snowboarding ride feels like should really give it a try. It can take a couple of hours to get the hang of linking sliding turns, but it's well worth it!

Foot Pads

I know where to get excellent foot pads. That is if you are looking for foot sized, pre-cut pads. It is nice to have pads in the sweet spots only. That way you can push with your foot at deck level and not raised. I know of a sandboard pad that has a heel pad, like a ramp. Who has tried a ramped foot pad. thinking about trying it.....

So I notice that quite a few old skateboarder
mags are on Ebay, going for $50 a pop in some
cases. I've got a pile of them in my basement.
Should I hang on to them, or should I cash in?
I think I'd rather reinvest them into equipment
than have them sit, but if the price trend is
up maybe I'll sit on them a while.

Try ebay auction site. I have three sets of wheels. The most I ever paid was 30 bucks a set. They weren't new, but not too much wear. www.ebay.com is great for getting all your skateboarding needs. I've bought bearings, longboards, wheels, and dirty movies off of it.

I think that the dirt wheels aren't worth it. Not for $109, man i can get those for $65 at my skateshop with hardware, and risers. i rode them for about 2 months before i got sick of them. Don't buy'em you'll be let down

Billy Copeland is a sick individual and should be in a mental institution. Just kidding. He's actually quiet and shy. You wouldn't think he would be the type to be in this sport. The TV show sucked. It's the joke of the luge world. BC has been on the hill I go down side by side with me at 75 mph then he hits the rockets and goes way too fast for me. I guarentee he's topped a hundred miles per hour. Due to the restrictions with all the camera gear. The place he needs has to be more open than the hill we were on. In ten seconds of rocket boost starting at 75 mph by my side. He ended up about 80 feet ahead-in just 10 seconds. WOW

The Cat Eye Velometer can be found in any bike shop. I've seen one adapted to a street luge. The time we used it we checked to see what our fastest speed was down a 17 mile run outside Denver. it said 81.3 mph. AAAACCCCCKKKKKK. All I know is we were flyin'. Don't know how accurate it is on a luge compared to what it's normally used on.

Sorry Tim ! There is no such thing. Sector 9 uses a foam neoprene like mouse pads. There is no martket for this stuff and Sector 9 won't sell it so they can sell only one board with it. Just try to find something that makes a good soft grip. I like to use flat smooth plush carpet. Then just use carpet tape and cut it with a sharp knife.

Those interested in adding a speedometer to their longboards might be able to adapt a digital bicycle speedo to the job. Most bicycle speedos that I have owned are adjustable to accommodate different wheel sizes. If you do a little math you can determine if a particular speedometer is capable of clocking a skateboard-sized wheel. The next challenge is affixing the magnet to the wheel. The Gravity I saw uses a Hyper Strada wheel with a solid core, where the core has a series of holes (vents?) drilled around the core. A small disk magnet, maybe 3mm diameter, is jammed into one of the holes. Then the pickup is nylon tied to the truck hanger where it can detect the magnet. To its credit, Gravity engineered a nice looking aluminum plate that holds the speedometer readout flush to the deck, which I assume is fitted into a recessed area of the nose of the deck (that's just a guess, since I haven't dissected one). Basic bicycle speedos cost around $20.

I had the opprotunity to demo an MBS mountainboard with a brake a few weeks ago, I can see how this would be benificial especially to the begginer but I think what I would tend to do would be lock up the brakes in a panic and I could really feel how you could go over the front of the board, I think this feeling would be even worse on a longboard where you're not strapped in. Plus I personally think a brake is just an excuse to be a bad rider and not learn how to power slide.
