Freestyle & Thrasher
On 6/23/2005 yoyo schulz wrote in from Germany  (84.178.nnn.nnn)

Thrasher used to know what Freestyle is / was. They had Rodney and Per on the covers; Rodney had a trick tips section.
Probably the 'old' staff is no longer around and Street sells better.
BUT: We are here to stay. There is more to skateboarding than Street. You are aware of it, that's why you are here on ncdsa.
Check out this link, issue#4 of Bail Mag had a write up on MY trick.

On 6/18/2005 ED NADALINS IN ITALY I THINK? wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

I wasnt putting down the Ollie lovin kid. I see it did look that way in print...

Putting into words the Freestyle of the 70s, is like trying to describe red to a blind man.
I think you'll have to look into getting videotape of Ed Nadalin & Russ Howell to "SEE".
Its been 30 Years & I still havent seen anyone, of that caliber, Freestylin. I know the pros of today are great riders. But I am still Looking forward to the day when FREESTYLE IS BACK, & The Equivalent of Russ Howell & Ed Nadalin Ride again. "Hey kid I know your out there" Get inspired! Find some footage of
Ed & Russ, & Then I think you"ll see Red.

On 6/15/2005 daniel trujillo wrote in from United States  (68.104.nnn.nnn)

this is in response to "ed nadalins in italy, i think" i turned 18 about 6 months ago, i used to street skate, and i love freestyle, it is basically my life. i skate everyday, and now that it is summer i will do it almost all day everyday. as of right now i am 1 of 2 freestylers in my state (the other is witter cheng who lives about 9 hours away) im not sure if i caught the whole jist of the post, but if i took it wrong tell me. i am an "ollie loving" kid, i do a lot of ollie based tricks, but i love the non-ollie tricks (coco-wheelies, nohand 50-50's, handstand variations) much much more. although i would like to, i know i will never come close to russ howells record. i can say i understand freestyle, but im 1 out of 2 million in las vegas that i know of. so although there might be very few, i wouldnt say there are none.

FREESTYLE?
On 6/13/2005 Ed Nadalins in Italy I think? wrote in from United States  (207.200.nnn.nnn)

Apparently They have little clue of the skill involved in this sport. And no doubt they never did & probably NEVER will, see Ed Nadalin or Russ howell skate FREESTYLE. Hmmmm boys when was the last time you did "1" 360. Russ howell, one hundred sixty plus,& 2 board tricks you still cant do & wont see, because you dont want your "BUDDY" to see you do FREESTYLE,so youll never learn. Or Ed Nadalin cruisin under Huntington pier grippin the board pure, & flying by you chest high, only to land & doso many different things with the board he was done & doin more while you were still in awe of his 1st flow.Yeah Boys I was good,& these Guys were GREAT! Forever leaving their mark on the sport. For anyone to put down this sport in any way, never had the true pure feeling of flowing through, what others called "tricks".These were expressions of something we loved to do. It was a pure time. Its been about 30 years for me, And "not one" ollie lovin kid has even come close to the kind, of pure fluidity of the FREESTYLE i know is possible. Hey kid I know your out there, Let the FREESTLYE flow, and "maybe" one day youll top Russ howells Record. But even if you dont,Maybe youll understand the pure fluid flow, of FREESTYLE.

I remember at 15-16ish in 1975-76ish
Concrete Wave Anahiem, Ca. I used to always wear a yellow Infinity (did I spell that right?)t-shirt, grilla gripping over skateboards in the parking lot and writers and camera crew coming up to me saying "what's your name Ed Nad" and I would say no I'm not Ed Nadalin and they would walk away I was clearing 3-4' high. my brother Karl my half hawaiian bro. used to party big time with Ed Nadalin. Karl Use to work at the Power Paw Speed Spring Fact. back in the day smoking the mary-jane, the funny thing is that I came with Ed Nadalin and Russ Howell. the other time was in Huntington Beach Fred Flavell, Russ Howell, Ed Nadalin, Dale Smith, I remember some of the Zepher boys were there and came with Russ Howell and Ed Nadalin, anyhow I was riding up the bank under the pier grilla gripping 180s, 360s and on top of the HB pier grilla gripping over the chains writers and camera crews came again "what's your name Skitch" and the same thing would happened and told them I wasn't that person, they would walk away. I guess I was a nobody!

thrasher
On 5/22/2005 Nate wrote in from United States  (71.114.nnn.nnn)

I saw the thrasher thing too, but thrasher has been doing this kind of slagging thing for years, and truly they were like the original Big Brother before BBM. One of the original slag articles that comes to mind is 'Night of the Living Swamp Trogs'or something like that which sort of highlighted and poked fun at oldschoolers with wider boards at the same time. It made me laugh but made me want to go out and get a wide board again and ride pools and old concrete skateparks again. Thrasher started off with the hardcore ramp and pool image, then like cattle changed with the times and went to an all street skate format, but there is too much of an influx of different disciplines to really take Thrasher seriously. Because it "sells" thrahser is back on track with the pool and park stuff and are sell-outs imo but still flip through it at the local bookstore for s#@!s and giggles. When you get down to it, it's all about demographics and what the 25 and below crowd is buying into and always has been. Take it tounge and cheek and keep skating no matter the style!

American Freestyle Skateboard Team
On 5/21/2005 Bob Staton wrote in from United States  (68.111.nnn.nnn)

The American Freestyle Skateboard Team is a fund raising project to assist freestylers interested in attending the WC in Brazil October 1st and 2nd.

This is going to be a great event! It is in a wonderful location and has good media coverage. This is as close to the Olympics as freestyle is going to get ( except for a possible demo) in the next few decades so lets get behind the yearly WC and support the skaters from our country. The FLIPS crew from Brazil are working hard so lets back them up by getting as many skaters there as possible.

Each team member gets his/her own signiture t-shirt printed up with a photo and their signiture on it.

If someone could post the t-shirt images for me here that would be great , I will send them the jpgs.

It will require each team member selling about 100 shirts to raise the aprox. $1000. needed for the round trip air fare. Sponsors may have their Logo placed on the back of the team members shirt for the contest for a $100. contribution.

Team USA members so far are:

Joe Humeres - Seasoned Pro with a winning record.

Terry Synnott - Top ranking US and International Pro

Mike Heller - ( of punked Thrasher fame) Recent winner of the LA Metro Open Freestyle Jam and the WFSA Venice Old School Jam Freestyle contest.

Several other freestylers and high jumpers will be joining Team USA soon.

Please support Team USA -

The shirts sell for $15.00 each plus $4.00 s&h.

Send your US Postal Money order to:

Robert Staton
630 E. Victoria St. # C
Santa Barbara, CA 93103

Thank you for your much needed support.

Tony, don't let that ruin your session. They are trying to "appear" core by poking fun at something. Its freestylle this month, next month its something else. Ignore it and go out and ride! I find it funny that they are poking fun at freestyle when they have had various front covers with Freestyle riders on them...oh well....I'm heading out to skate.

New thrasher
On 5/11/2005 Tony wisneske wrote in from United States  (209.66.nnn.nnn)

I hate thrasher now. I read it just before my freestyle session and it ruined it. They say they want to support individual and original mindsets. They want to support all skating. Why would they make fun of something that helped them be where they are now? They see one person who still dresses like the 80's and assume that all freestylers still dress like that. They stereotype, they lie, and they, well, suck! I've lost all respect for thrasher.
