Pre Cadilac wheels...
On 9/4/2002 Dan Hughes wrote in from (209.191.nnn.nnn)

Excerpt From "The Concrete Wave"
Published By Warwick Books

"In 1970, a surfer by the name of Frank Nasworthy visited a friend at a plastics factory in Purcellville, Virginia. The factory made urethane wheels for Roller Sports, a chain of roller rinks. The urethane ensured roller skaters would have decent traction and Frank realized that the urethane wheels would fit on his Hobie Skateboard. He decided to develop a skateboard wheel made from urethane. As you would expect, the ride is magnificant compared to clay wheels. Frank promoted the product in the San Diego area and he initially met with a great deal of resistance. Over time however, the urethane wheel gained a following and word spread throughout California of these tremendous wheels.

By 1973, Frank Nasworthy's Cadiallac Wheels launched skateboardings' second boom."

Roller Sports Urethane Standard
On 9/4/2002 Tim wrote in from (209.244.nnn.nnn)

Anyone know the history on these? They were pre-Cadillac, but were they the very first urethane wheels? Who came up with it first and who manufactured them?

Sims Bowmans

They may not have had his name on the actual wheel, but they definitely marketed them as Sims Bowmans until Brad left Sims for a career in hair and makeup.

Ice Blades and Curling shoes
On 9/2/2002 GBJ wrote in from (68.49.nnn.nnn)

Yeah, Dave, we'd seen that too, back then, but always knew it was bogus, because I also happen to come from a family of curlers. Curling shoes provide little more, if any, more traction than a standard tennis show or sneaker. It was exactly because I used to each Monday might at a "curling club" where the ice reverted to public skating ice when we were finished. If you know anything about curling, you know that means awful ice for curling, but it made a great chance to try to ride my ice blades on a big, empty rink, with no other interference.

Time for some sort of 'Vintage 1980-90' forum, perhaps...?
At 21 years old, I reckon the B-52's deserve some standing in the oldeness stakes!

Sims B-52 Bowman
On 9/1/2002 PSR wrote in from (216.114.nnn.nnn)

Dan,the B-52 isn't quite pre-80 vintage,as it showed up in late '81,as a wheel in the "B" series of Sims' wheel lineup. The "52" refers to the width, and these were 64mm(well,maybe 1/2mm smaller)in diameter, came in a 95A,and later in softer(91A,88A,82A?)and harder(97A)formulas.They didn't have the core that the B-1's had,nor the width of the B-56,but were favored by Folmer and Bowman for pool riding, and had Brad Bowman's name attached to the endorsement, but I don't recall seeing his name on the wheels themselves[?].Nice double radiused/conical shape to them, but a bit heavy.Collectible,Ridable, but maybe not as good as some others out there.

I remember a couple of shots of Mike Weed on a board with Ice Blades mounted in a skating rink. I believe it was in the caption that he was wearing curling shoes for traction.

Sims B-52 wheels
On 8/31/2002 Dan Hughes wrote in from (209.191.nnn.nnn)

Today I was working at a school, and some kids had an old board they were riding. I asked to take a look at it. And it looked like an old Vision board of some sort. Had vision trucks, and two vision wheels. However, the other two wheels were Sims B-52's. And I didn't know if they were worth something or not. It looked like a late 80's board, but I don't know. Anyone know anything about these wheels?

OK, I've just stopped the insanity bidding on this, it's just over my price tag because I don't really know what it is-but it sure looks cool. As a skier and skater from way back, I love it. Anybody have any history/facts on it? Is it all fiberglass or does it per chance have a foam core?

If this doesn't work, go to ebay and search "K2 Slalom USA"

Fibreflex Bowtuff boards
On 8/29/2002 Mike II wrote in from (216.175.nnn.nnn)

I've got 3 old Fibreflex boards-Hester, Cutaway and a Slalom, that I am considering restoring since no one seems to really want to buy them or trade for them in their current condition. I am curious to see if anyone has had any experience in restoring any of these bad boys. I am also curious if anybody has suggestions for peeling off old stickers without destroying them. Any positive ideas would be appreciated.

Ice Blades
On 8/29/2002 GBJ wrote in from (68.49.nnn.nnn)

Honestly... I think that, even if I did have some kind of a toe spike to push with, trying to push those ice blades up to any appreciable speed would've been very difficult. The single-edged blades had such a propensity to dig in that the whole board really had to be forced in any direction you might want it to go, and even the time of lifting and replacing your foot between pushes was enough to kill all of the momentum from the previous push. That's why I used the flying-leap start... at least I'd get to feel the thing glide for more than about ten feet.

ice blades were out well before pigs,so the boards were narrow and a toe spike attached to the toe area of the back foot wouldn't even be noticed once the foot was in place.

1978 Hester Santa Cruz H Bomb, Small pivot Mid tracks, OJ super juices. Race ready even today. Coolest set up was LBK's memorial board belonging to his friend who passed. It was a Stacy Peralta Warptail(the shorter one) with Split Gullwings, and I forget what wheels. All stock as it was left. Very Cool.

You're not going mad! As GBJ wrote, 'dem thangs is slow!!!
However,
I had a set that I used on an old Bahne deck that had a sail for!! It used a white plastic circular mount, that was fastened by 1 central screw, and the mast sat in it, only used it 2 or 3 times on a frozen lake (Alum creek) in the winter of '78.. Wish I still had that set-up, to remind me of when we had real winters.

Thanks for that GBJ, its great to find someone who actually rode those things. Now somewhere in the back of my mind is a skateboard with blades and a sail on the front. Or am I going mad? I'm sure I've seen a picture of this kind of thing.

Ice Blades
On 8/25/2002 GBJ wrote in from (68.49.nnn.nnn)

I have a set of ice blades. I don't necessarily recall them being "Newporter" ice blaces, but maybe that was an overseas packaging. Mine are the single-edged blades that tend to dig in a bit and be a little less than functional. The best way to experience a little speed on them was to run across the ice on foot and do a barrel-jump type mount on the board. Once they were moving, they could be tic-tac'd for quite a bit. The best time on them was during a heavy mid-Atlantic ice storm, when even paved hills were coated with at least 2 inches of ice. Then you could actually get them going downhill and actually ride them, but how often does one come upon sloped ice?

Newporte Ice Blades
On 8/25/2002 Michael wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Wow. Today i went to Romford skatepark in London. First of all, it never, ever closed and was built in the 70's. They even still chuck you out at 2pm if you have a half day ticket.
Anyway the guy that runs it pulled out some Newporter Ice Blades for puttin on a board in winter to ride ice. Now how mad is that??? They were even in the original packaging.
Also there was a Hobieflex Slalom board and a set of Wasp trucks...(a UK Gullwing rip off).
Ice blades...how do you push off?

the final word on 2x4 skateboards...
On 8/25/2002 Patio wrote in from (63.65.nnn.nnn)

last night, after returning from Asheville's Team Pain park, I kicked back and popped in my Animal Chin tape.
now, the boys were seeking Chin back in 1987.
a news broadcast in the film talks of the veteran skater "Won-Ton" Animal Chin...they mention his age of 62yrs, and that he started riding long ago on a 2x4 with roller skates nailed to the bottom.
so if Chin was 62 back in 1987, I am guessing that he rode the 2x4 even before Hester.
