open/pro controversy

I had a thought, have a novice class or something where it works like drag strip racing. Like, there is a minimum time, and if you go faster than it, you are disqualified. Or is that a stupid idea?

I am proud to say that I took my free energy swill (Red Bull), and stood in front of the cameras by the start gates. When the camera would sweep by, I would take a nice drink and twist my face into an expression of disgust. Product placement, yippie!

And that kid with the red cast was crazy. He should have taken home the thousand bucks.

Mark Saturday Oct 26th in your calanders... real good chance that we'll have a pro rider from both carveboard and freebord (with some demo boards) up here in the Antelope Valley for the Skate-off! Open House.

We'll be meeting on a hill in the Juniper Hills area of Palmdale.

If your interested in trying out the snowboard cross-trainer boards, getting some tips from some team riders, or just watching... shoot me an email! There are some pretty sweet hills to carve an bomb too! HR

Like all NY longboarders I'm gettin' really stoked for next weekend's Brodway Bomb race. I've rolled from 59th to 34th on Brodway before but no where near the whole course (110th to near the tip of the island). With this in mind I'm gonna be taking a practice run on Saturday at noon or sunday at noon if it is raining on Sat. I'm gonnna start from the starting line at 110th and brodway so if you wanna check it out meet me there.

Cliff and Wesley,

I'm with you guys are saying. Paul is one of my favorite racers to watch. I stand by his and Martin's decision to race Open. Both of those guys started the series cold with no prior practice because they were in Utah and the snow had yet to clear. Also, the Open class does not equal Amature nor does it mean Novice. There are some former Pros from 20 years ago that are in the open catagory.

So lets have fun and race.

Looking forward to seeing Wesly, Cliff, Martin, Paul and the rest of the slalom community at Morro Bay.

Peace,

DR

Pro or Open
On 10/8/2002 Cliff Coleman wrote in from (209.179.nnn.nnn)

I agree with W Tucker, to race Open or Pro is a choice made by the rider. As great as Paul Price is, there are also the likes of Terrance Kirby, Floyd, Martin Drayton, Steve Tamanaha, Tay Hunt, Saili, (sp)? Jonathan Reese, Michael Bream, Noah H, Clayton Scott and Miko Biffle. All of these riders have climbed the podium. There are even a few more I've forgotten, sorry guys!

There are few "easy" passes in the Open class. There are others to look for like fast improving Dave Bryant. UR13 is very fast as is Mike Ohm. The list of talent is quite long.

Although Mr. Price has dominated the Open class, he earned it by making most of the races. He has been beaten. It hasn't happened often, but I have done it, and so have others. The entire top half of the Open class is very fast.

As the weekend approaches and after it passes we'll all reflect on what took place this year, Let's not bitch. Let's instead concentrate on our own performances and understand that all of us are getting better. Enjoy and be proud of that. Just the way it is and what has taken place this year has been incredible!

Thanks FCR/TLP!

Paul has my respect for his racing, and I respect his and everyone else's choice when choosing to race pro or Open.

Cliff Coleman

Racing Pro and Racing Open
On 10/8/2002 W Tucker wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

Or maybe Paul should do what he pleases and dominate the Open/Amateur ranks?

There are Open skaters who can beat the pros. There are pro skaters who are a long way from contending for anything close to the podium. Whether or not a skater races pro or open is an individual choice.

Let's not start asking why Paul isn't a Pro skater. Let's instead do what is necessary to make Paul a 2ND PLACE Open skater. It's not about his ability to win. It's about everyone else's inability to defeat him. I've raced Paul and lost to Paul. (It was REALLY close.) I didn't walk away, though, saying, "he had no business being in the same bracket with me!" Instead, I said to myself, "myself, so that's what it takes to win in 2002? Guess I got a lot of work to do!"

Paul Price Has Funny Socks
On 10/8/2002 lbk wrote in from (64.157.nnn.nnn)

Paul is in the open division because he is not a "pro-skater". FCR set it up that way. And that is not a slam on FCR. It is just how it was set up and I agree with FCR on for this year but it doesn’t mean I’m 100% happy with it. Maybe there is room for suggestions for deciding who or what determines Pro or Open. But that is for a few months from now. No need to spoil things weekend.

Maybe Paul should get an invite into the Pro Ranks. Or maybe he should step it up to the pro ranks and jump in on Friday. Anyway, next year a bunch of the open guys should transition to the pros.

PS russianmarineplywood is not my post. If I could make it to MB I’d be in the open class even though I could probably beat every one in the PRO division. In chess.

California Slalom Series #4 Results
(California Championship Series date 7)
West LA College, California
10/6/02

The fourth slalom of the 2002 California Championship series (and seventh date of the 10 date series) at West LA College featured a challenging tight slalom that left 2 racers with no finishes. Paul Price had a blazing run for the win over Richy and Attila. The tenth annual skates and gates slalom showed Wes Carpenter’s gate bashing skill taking in the skateboard division, with Scott posting the fastest time of the day on inlines. The skates and gates race is derived from ski slalom races, and features racers knocking down the slalom poles at about 25 mph, plus hitting an optional jump between turns. The combination of speed, 35 turns, jumps, poles that will smack you in the face if you don’t hit them down first, and sand bags that can trip you up if you miss your line intimidated many racers to not race. Fifth place skateboard took home Turner wheels, and winners all took home sets of Oust Bearings (the bearing of choice for Richy). At the end of the warm day, there were plenty of smiles from tired racers and friends and family.

Tight Slalom (best of 3, 0.1seconds/cone):
Paul Price 14.202
Richy Carrasco 14.481
Attila Aszodi 14.616
Beau Brown 15.457
Martin Drayton 15.469 (came from U.K.!)
Floyd Reid 15.975
Chris Eggers 16.035 (more U.K.!)
Brent Kosick 16.131
Wes Carpenter 16.584
Michel Kaelon 17.866
Mike Gorman 17.936
Tiger Williams 18.841
Chris Cincoto 18.982
Grant Chamberlain 20.395

Skateboards and Gates Slalom (best of 2 runs, must make all gates):
Wes Carpenter 27.643
Richy Carrasco 28.806
Attila Aszodi 31.353
Micheal Kaelon 33.776
Tiger Williams 34.806
Chris Cincota 35.555
Mike Gorman 38.074

Inline Skates and Gates Slalom (best of 2 runs, must make all gates):
Scott Peer 24.171 (fastest on course)
Ellen Palazzo 30.652 (teenage girl strikes again!)
June Palazzo 32.398 (Ellen’s mom)
Frank Boyd 14.575 (short course)
Stephen Palazzo 15.094 (short course, the youngest Palazzo)
