X-Games
On 6/24/1998 Gunnar Southswell wrote in from ()

There's also one more standup avi/QuickTime at

http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/xgames/summerx98/multimedia/demosports.html

This is also the spot where you can vote for your favorite
X-Games Demo Sport. When I voted, Standup Downhill
Skateboarding had 58%.

So remember vote early and vote often.

Actually they probably have software that disallows multiple
votes from the same IP address. Still Go vote anyway.

Just thought you all would like to know that there are
QuickTime and avi video clips that you can download at the
ESPN site. URL is

Just look under Multimedia. It's a fairly short clip that
shows four of the six riders in the final round going down.

X-Games Standup Downhill
On 6/22/1998 Chris wrote in from ()

Todcar,

I hate to say this, but I think we missed it. I went to
the ESPN site, and there was an article about standup. The
url is

http://ESPN.SportsZone.com/xgames/summerx98/980619standup.html

Apparently, it happened on Thursday. I'm bummed. Even had
I known about it ahead of time, that was the one day last
week I couldn't have taken off. The article doesn't
mention whether they are planning on doing it again or
whether they plan on televising Thursday's action. I'll
keep my ear to the ground and if I hear anything, I'll post
here as soon as I can get to a computer.

Chris

I'm going with Jim Cluggish and Noel McComas to Oahu 6-15 through 6-27. We're taking our skates and gloves and will be having the locals there show us the better slopes. I just returned from Hawaii, I saw many hills and I'm looking forward to riding them when I return.

ALL GIRLS SKATE JAM
On 5/18/1998 Sector-9-Sista wrote in from ()

The ALL GIRLS SKATE JAM = an all girl of all ages skater "festival"...competitions, food, booths, and much more. This event is also a benefit for the American Paralysis Association.

Here's some info that Patty S. (the founder of the event) told me:

Last years All Girls Skate Jam was an enormous success!!!! Televised on ESPN and Fox TV including STV and received a write up if not a story in the following mags: Transworld Business Skateboarding, Transworld Skateboarding, Fresh and Tasty Women's Snowboarding (now formerly known as Fresh and Tasty Women's Board Sports,) Heckler, Strength, Royal Crown, W.I.G, Thrasher, etc..

This year's event will take place on Sept. 12th 1998 noon in close proximity of the San Diego Convention Center during the ASR Trade Expo. (TBA) And this year's event will include a LONGBOARD SKATEBOARDING DIVISION.

Magazines can sponsor the All Girls Skate Jam by writing a story on it and or giving the event a placement ad in an issue released before September. In return you can receive a banner placement which will receive an enormous amount of coverage (TV and Magazine.) Other companies... $1000 BASICALLY GETS THEIR BANNERS HUNG UP WHICH ALLOWS THEM MAJOR TV COVERAGE AND MAGAZINE COVERAGE (INTERNATIONALLY).

If you need more info, or you want to sponsor this event, e-mail me!!

Southern California Sidewalk Surfing Contest
On 4/24/1998 Chris wrote in from ()

If you've been keeping up with what what is going on down under via Souled Out, you know that they are planning a Sidewalk Surfing contest for this May. I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in getting something like that together in Southern California. It just seems like if we wait for the x-treme sports crowd to catch up with longboarding, we're going to have a long wait. We might as well start the wheel rolling ourselves.

Events could include, but would not be limited to:

Flatland Freestyle (Hot Dogging?). Possibly in two divisions, short (to get the kids involved) and longboards.

Slalom. Whatever varieties, close cone, giant slalom, banked slalom.

Bank Riding.

Street, i.e., ramps, obstacles, etc. This might be roughly the same thing as bank riding.

Ollie High Jump. Again for the kids.

Downhill Freestyle (Soul Riding).

Downhill. I wouldn't compete in this myself. I take too long to heal. It may not be necessary anyway. The X Games is supposed to feature speedboarding this year, so this aspect of the sport may be coming into its own already.

Anyway, if you're interested or just want to bounce ideas around, drop me a line as well as posting a message here. That way people who might be inclined to get involved, but are waiting to see if there's any interest, will jump in.
