Event Date and Time: Sunday, June 13, 2004  10:00
Event Duration:
Location: West LA College, California
Entry: Open
Helmets:
Organizer: Westwood Ski Club, IGSA
Map:
Entry Fee: $25
Contest Info: Westwood Ski and Sports Club and the International Gravity Sports
Association (IGSA) are pleased to announce the start of the 2004
California Championship gravity racing series, with racing at
West LA College for skateboard, inline skate, classic luge (buttboard),
street luge, and gravity bikes (with help from GBA). All races will
count towards the IGSA world rankings. There will be a variety of
awards and prizes at each race, and at the end of the series there
will be special series awards for the top point-getters (dropping each
racer's worst result in each discipline, for disciplines with more than
2 races). Sponsors include Turner Downhill wheels,
Bones Bearings, Ed Economy longboards and Kryptonics wheels.

Each of the dates will have racing for several sports and practice
available at a reduced price for the sports not competing on that date.
The events will take place rain or shine, but if it rains the schedules
may change (for example a tight slalom might be postponed for rain,
but luge would race in the rain).

The season starts on Sunday June 13 at West LA College, with a
skateboard tight slalom race on B Street and luge (all kinds),
downhill inline, downhill skateboard, and gravity bikes on C Street.
D Street will be available for giant slalom practice.

June 13 Schedule (preliminary, be sure to check at registration):
9:00 Setup
10:00 Registration and practice starts
11:30 Downhill qualifying (inline, stock bike, classic, fairing bike, skateboard, luge)
12:30 Tight slalom race (overlapping downhill race)
1:00 Downhill races
4:00 Awards ceremony
5:00 End of permit time

The series dates and locations are currently being determined. Due to construction starting at West LA College, our regular location will be unavailable for most of the season and we're working on alternatives at West LA College and elsewhere. The current calendar that we're working on is:
Jun 13 WLAC DH + tight slalom
Aug ?? Mammoth Giant Slalomcross
Aug ?? Mammoth DH
Sep ?? Mammoth Giant Slalomcross
Sep ?? TBD GS + tight slalom at new location
Oct ?? WLAC DH
Oct ?? WLAC fast slalom + tight slalom
Nov ?? WLAC DH + tight slalom + season awards party
Note: "DH" = luge, gravity bike, inline/skateboard downhill
"GS" = inline and skateboard giant slalom
sports not listed may practice

Please remember that alcoholic beverages are prohibited on campus.
We have received complaints about them in the past, so please do not
display them or leave empty containers, even in the trash cans.

Entry fees for season club members are:
$35 for downhill competitors (up to 2 classes)
$25 for tight slalom competitors (free if racing downhill)
$10 for Juniors (under 18) and those not racing (practice only)
$5 for each additional class after the first one
Joining Westwood Ski and Sports Club as a full member is
encouraged, and entitles you to participate in ski and snowboard
races and trips, water ski trips, parties, skating practices,
equipment discounts, and more. Please bring your checkbook to
become a full member ($35/year). Day memberships are available
for $5/day, and are required for all riders who are not full members
(i.e.: non-member fees are $40, $30, and $15). Juniors (under 18)
must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and will be charged
only a practice fee even if they race. Spectators are free. Also, the
first few who come early to help with the street cleaning and setup
in the morning (or teardown at the end) will receive a free race entry!

Manufacturers and shop owners, it's not too late to supply prizes
for these races! You can even just show up with something to
add to the prize pool, and bring your banner to hang. We'll be
sure to mention you in upcoming announcements.

Protective gear: IGSA equipment rules will be used.
For slalom and giant slalom this means helmets, pads
(elbow and knee), and hand protection (gloves and/or wrist
guards) are required, and hip pads are recommended. Please,
no short shorts or tank tops. For street luge, buttboard,
gravity bikes, and downhill skateboard and inline, helmets,
leathers, and leather gloves are required. We're building an
equipment pool to loan to people who forget things, please
donate your old gear, it may save someone a long trip home!

See you there!

Scott

Overall Results: 2004 California Championship Series
Race #1 (Downhill and Slalom)
June 13, 2004
West Los Angeles College, California, USA
by Scott Peer and George Merkert

The weather was fair and temperate for competitors at West Los Angeles
College for the start of the 2004 California Championship gravity racing
series. The downhill coursesetter set a course with the two sharp turns--a
fairly sharp left hander leading to a very sharp right hander before the
finish line. The tough turns caused numerous slides, blowouts, and
crashes, but no one was injured.

Roger Jennings (LA Speed Team) took first in the Downhill Skateboard event.
The skateboard event used a points accumulation format. Each racer
accumulated points based on their finish order in a heat. After three heats
Roger and 17 year old skater Steven Wu had duelled to a tie. Roger,
gentleman that he is, agreed to race another heat to break the tie even
though the traditional means of settling a tie (reverting to qualifying
times) would have favored him. Not to be denied, LA Speed's finest
skateboarder won the tie breaker and the race.

In inline downhill Scott Peer once again rolled onto the top step of the
podium. Defeated LA Speed teammate George Merkert was dejected that yet
another of his strategies to best Peer at West LA College had fallen short
of the mark. "I'm running out of ideas about how to beat that guy. The last
four times we've raced I've tried to win four different ways. Nothing
seems to work," he said, ruefully. Warren Focke, back in racing form after
his altercation with a car, took third. Dave Lambert turned in a fourth
place finish with a fine effort. Mark Henley had a difficult day with only
a single clean run in all his qualifying and racing heats (eliminating
Frank Boyd in the process). Taking an inside route through turn 2 in hope
of passing Warren in his elimination heat Mark displaced a cone with his
hand and was disqualified.

Tyler Wendtland showed continued improvement in his racing, winning both
street luge and classic luge. The youngest competitor of the day, Chase
Orta (9 years old), displayed excellent racing form in classic luge and
will be a racer to contend with in the future.

In gravity bikes Jason Madore took the fairing bike win, with Dave Kessler
taking the stock bike win in dual elimination racing.

In the tight slalom it was yet another Richy Carrasco win. Afterwards the
racers put together an informal giant slalom race (with John O'Shei posting
the fastest time).

Special thanks go out to our new sponsor for the gravity bike awards, Dr.
No Racing, as well as returning sponsors Pure Guts and Kryptonics
wheels. Also, many thanks are due to IGSA (Marcus and Bob) for the huge
effort needed to make the race such a fun and safe event.
