Contest Info: In the summer of 2003, Jack Smith, Gary Fluitt, Paul Dunn and Nick Krest will set a world record when they push their skateboards almost 3000 miles from Oregon to Virginia in a little over three weeks. This skateboard crossing of America will be a way to draw attention to a rare genetic syndrome called Lowe Syndrome that afflicted the son of Jack Smith. His 14-year-old son, Jack Marshall Smith, passed away May 6th, 2003 from complications of Lowe Syndrome.

"My son has been an incredible inspiration to myself and many others, whose lives he has touched. This is my chance to pay him back for all that he has taught me".

Smith, along with friends Paul Dunn, Bob Denike, and Gary Fluitt set the world skateboard distance record nearly twenty years ago when they completed the transcontinental skate in 26 days. "This time it will be a lot harder" Smith said "we're all in our 40's now, we have jobs and families, and pushing a skateboard 150 miles a day isn't so easy on old bones".

Jack has made the crossing twice, once in 1976 and again in 1984. Longtime friends Paul and Gary joined him on the 1984 trek. The 1984 trip benefitted The Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The team is currently seeking sponsors for the trek. All proceeds generated from crossing will be donated to the Lowe Syndrome Association

There are two ways to make a pledge. The first is a specific amount. The other is to pledge a certain amount per mile. The route is 2,900 miles. To make a mileage based pledge simply multiply your per mile fee by the 2,900 miles.

For example:

2,900 miles skated x.15 per mile pledge = $435.00

You may pledge by Paypal by clicking the button above or by mail to:
