Jack Smith versus Nick Leonard at the Freeformer World Championships at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.

This was a very strange race. We were rained out on Saturday and Sunday, finally raced on Monday.

CBS and Freeformer kept changing the racing format throughout the day from head to head to top speed/mph.

When you watch the clip, the order of Nick and my runs are reversed. On the first run (which is actually) the second run, you will see me get a bit squirrely and the announcer (Denis Shufeldt) comments on it. I was told by a CBS producer to tap my brakes on the way down to insure Nick crossing the line, as they had already determined he was the winner based on mph. Being a rookie, I agreed. In post-production they reversed the runs, to fit the outcome they wanted.

In fact if you listen to Nick's interview afterward, he sounds totally confused. It really didn't matter all that much, I had fun anyway.

Hi Don: I no nothing about skate cars. I was surfing the net looking for Mike Baumea. He used to shape boards for me and friends. I was a close friend of Don Gonzales. I remember you also being an artist/designer of things. I also attended your Dad"s funeral. You may or may not remember me. Anyway I was feeling nostalgic and was wondering what your brother was up to. Hopefully you are da guy. If you are please write back. Thanks. sincerely Rick hohmann

although not lean-steered (one may have been), the unlimited class at Akron may nevertheless be entertaining for those interested in skatecars. Some of the wheels were made by familiar companies. click on the "ultimate speed" links here:

the race was last week in Akron, on the exact same hill as Jack's video
