Event Duration:
Location: Salem Soap Box Derby Hill, Salem, Oregon
Entry: Open
Helmets:
Organizer: Pauliwog /Cascade Slalom Association
Map:
Entry Fee: Leaf Blowers, push brooms, dustpans/shovels
Contest Info: WHAT: This is an outlaw unofficial non-event/non-race. This will be for everyone at all levels to come and have fun slaloming and eating. Joe Beck has been missing all season but actually is alive and kicking. The event was originally the Joe Beck Memorial but that scared so many people I thought I'd better change the name. Joe had the great idea about an event of getting everyone together for a ride and with the idea that everyone could try each other's equipment so everyone could get ideas of what they like for future purchases. This will also be a good primer for everyone before our "season" officially starts and a good event for beginners.
************************************************************
ATTENTION: PER BUSH PARK/SALEM LAWS, NO ALCOHOL,WEED, OR BIG SALES OF THINGS ALLOWED- If you want to be discrete about such things that's your business, this is everybody's slalom party and I don't want to see it get busted.
************************************************************
THE SITUATION: The Salem Soap Box Derby hill is now cleaner so everyone should still bring push brooms(no blowers)and show up a little early if possible. I'll bring a BBQ, some burgers, sausages, and other food, feel free to contribute food to the cause or bring an extra BBQ and your own chairs. I'll bring 70 cones and chalk, feel free to bring cones if you have any. This hill is used by kids on wheeled devices of all sorts so we probably won't attract much attention other than kids wanting to try slaloming.

****NEWS UPDATE*********************************************
Sunday 28 March '04 Dave M., Pete I., and I slalomed in the park but not the SBD hill due to a cart race, Later Pete, Derf, Scott L, and myself rode the SBD hill complete with cones and it's pretty clean and pretty darn nice. REMEMBER TO BRING HELMETS AND LOANER HELMETS IF YOU GOT'EM AND NO PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED UNLAWFUL BEHAVIOR,And if you're so inclined and would like to help out the newbies-bring a "loaner" complete setup for those lacking such implements.
Sunday April 4th (same day as us) Salem Parks is having a big cleanup event for Bush Park with both volunteers and park (city)employees so we need to keep it low-key and not look like an "event".
**********************************************************
TIMERS/RACING - If you got 'em, bring 'em. This is a "fun" nonrace event so only if the cleanup crews (see above) are done/gone and everyone including the newbies wants to go head-to-head with timers and have a "real" race will we do so (we'll get enough of rigid race type riding at the "real" races-which is fun also). I'm totally in favor of putting a timer on one run the whole day so people can time themselves and/or do single run racing.

DIRECTIONS: From I-5, take the Highway 22 West/Mission street exit and go west into Salem. Stay on Highway 22/Mission Steet for 2.7 miles and look south/left for Bush Park. Look for a big college sports track stadium and just to the west side of that you'll see the soap box derby hill with a painted cement sign at the bottom of the hill near the parking lot, "Ya can't miss it" - really.

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED, AND ALL OTHER PADS AND STUFF ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

SIGN UP ONLINE OR CALL SO I KNOW HOW MUCH FOOD TO BRING!
VEGETARIANS:If you're a veggie, BYOV or call me,no problem!

BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT- er, um, I mean pool boards just in case of unforseen busts or we're done and want to ride Newberg, Aumsville (illuminated all night), or somewhere else.

QUESTIONS: Call Paul at (541)754-7826
1st Place Finisher: Pretty much everybody who showed up
2nd Place Finisher: Blah, Blah, Blah
3rd Place Finisher: Same as Before
Overall Results: As the "organizer" I had a blast and so did everyone else as far as I could tell. This was not a timed "race" but rather a BBQ slalom get-together with a pretty good turnout (57 plus -riders and their family members/friends- at one count). Events included G/S, Hybrid, and 100 cone tight, and BBQ! Thanks to everyone who showed up, rode, donated food, drinks, cones, sweeping, BBQ's,cheered us on, etc. A similar mid or end of season similar event might be done as well. Thanks Everyone! Later- Pauliwog
