83MM
On 5/12/2011 David wrote in from United States  (66.14.nnn.nnn)

They feel really nice on my DH skate. I played with a set at Barrett Junction last weekend and they really smooth out the cracks and rough pavement. I wanted to throw a set on my luge while I was there but didn't get around to it.

Quick answers for Abdil
On 2/10/2011 David wrote in from United States  (66.14.nnn.nnn)

1) I always run the trucks as close as possible regardless of wheel size. It feels better, responds better and grips better.

2) For RB luges and RB fairings..yes they are faster. I can’t say the same about other fairings as many that I have seen do not include some of the key aerodynamic features in the RB kit. You don’t want any lift or down force created by the fairing. A luge is much different from a race car.

3)Bearings don’t matter. Lubes don’t seem to matter. I’ve used all types of oil, grease, Teflon, Triflow, Triflon, Krytox, graphite, Mobil1, … you name it. Never saw any measurable change down the hill. If you “pack” too much grease in the bearings, I can see a potential for increased friction. You only need a little to do the job.

4)A smaller helmet should be faster if you can keep your head as low as you can with the wedge. The visibility of the wedge is hard to beat while in a proper luge tuck.

5)75-85mm, 75-80a, “slalom” shapes for grip courses, “flywheel” types for speed courses. Test a few different wheels on the track to see what works the best for the particular surface. I just got a set of the new 83mm Centrax…can’t wait to try those!

Speed questions
On 2/10/2011 Abdil wrote in from Australia  (115.133.nnn.nnn)

Hi Dave. Just rewriting the questions from Facebook on this forum. You're right, it's alive!

Here are my street luge related questions....

1) On a luge with 2 trucks up front, assuming the front truck and middle truck are spaced as close as possible when running 85mm wheels, would there be any significant wheel scrub when smaller wheels (75mm) are used with the same spacing between the 2 front trucks?

2) Is there any significant difference in max speed and/or time down any given hill, when using fairings and without fairings? I haven't fully tested this variable enough yet, so would like to know your observations.

3) Time and time again, I've heard from many top street luge and standup racers (including yourself) that bearings don't matter. Personally, I've GPS tested ceramic bearings, steel bearings, and Biltin bearings, on 2 different courses that I ride consistently here in Malaysia, and I found absolutely no difference in max speeds and times. Because I was able to prove this using real world testing and I get very consistent times (at home and at the races), I am convinced by the data/evidence I've gathered, and so I agree with these top racers.

However, I suspect that bearings matter when it comes to lubrication. Is it correct to say that bearings packed with white lithium grease are much, MUCH, slower than those lubed with light oil (like Bones Speed Cream) and/or dry Teflon?

4) Aero helmets (like Charly and Icaro) versus Bell Wedge / Snorider Wedge....any speed / time difference?

5) Wheel selection for different types of roads....how do you select wheel size, shape/geometry, and duro that you will use on a race course? Thanks in advance for your insights.

Wish I was there at that great road Jimmy. The weather has been so good for DH. Closed mountain highways are such a nice treat. I still can't get over the $2.50 bus fare that gets you 4000 vertical feet of riding!

1975 World Record Board Model
On 8/25/2009 Guy Grundy wrote in from United States  (65.117.nnn.nnn)

Hey all- would have posted this myself but just got back from taking my lady to Alaska. The place is beautiful but so commercialized! Anyway, while I was away SkateWhat released my 1975 Downhill board and I have to say it looks bitchen! They only made 30 that are numbered Limited Edition and I have been given #1. I know that numbers 2 through 6 and number 8 have all been sold as of this morning when I talked with John Hughes. As John stated, I will be at the ASR Show in San Diego signing boards so if you would like to stop by and say hello that would be GREAT !

P.S. saw some HUGE hills to ride in Alaska - freakin HUGE!
