The organizers of the 2009 World Championships have decided to add a separate MASTERS class.
This is in response to the racers asking for this.
(We also eliminated the PRO Women's class). All of the Women will race in the OPEN (PRO/AM) class. (The women wanted to race all in one big group).
Additionally, the # of competitors advancing to the finals (head to head) is not 16 racers .... the MINIMUM number advancing is per the ISSA rules [which dictates the # to be advanced based on the size of the group of racers who have qualifying times].

I saw there were some questions on the Masters (over 45) for the Worlds. I am Master by age - born 1963
Quite a few of the older pros are now Masters!
Here is my take on it, IMHO:
1. Masters was mentioned in the ISSA sanction for the Worlds so should be included.
2. Masters in other sports are Pro's who are just older (e.g. tennis, snowboarding, Tony Hawk in skateboarding).
3. It would be cool to have a separate Masters race, in the same Pro course.
4. Pros and Ams should be free to enter the Masters contest (more racing for everyone).
5. To save time the same qualifying times could be used on the Pro course from the Pro qualifying.
6. There is no reason why the Masters (over 45) cannot compete in the Pros if fast enough.
The under 45's should be good enough to beat us old guys by now!

I'll be racing AM, but IMO if the ISSA is going to have a season points ranking for Masters, then there should be a Masters class in any MAIN or MAJOR that has 8 or more of 'em. Why go after points in a division if the biggest race of the year won't give 'em to you?

Does anyone besides me think that the Worlds should have a Masters Division? There have been Masters Divisions popping up in most of the races this year, so why not the biggest one of all?
We could be mixed in with the GS since we race the same course. For Hybrid & Tight put us up early and get us done. Hell, knowing the older guys like I do, This will give the promoters a great source of volunteers after we are finished. We all want to stay and see our friends race so we would all pitch in. Sort of an instant payback, eh?
What do you guys have to say?

ps. I'm thinking of only entering the Masters if other Pros decide to. I understand that Pirnack, Cbark and Fluitt are thinking about a shift one day, maybe not this time though.

Good suggestion Martin. I have been to many races where a single set of qualification runs have been used to bracket racers into even multiple divisions. I believe that it was done at Morro Bay last year. Once the head-to-head gets going, it seems to go very quickly--especially if various divisions are interspersed. Doing so saves having to wait for racers to walk back up the hill.

Just a thought...If you are going to take the result of qualifying runs to decide Master's titles (unfair to do it AFTER head-to-head races for obvious reasons), why not just run the top 8 or 4 as duals so that the masters actually race each other? How long would that take?

What we will not be doing is having a separate head-to-head bracket with just MASTER racers. The MASTER racers will be in the normal Amateur head-to-head bracketing.

no solid promises yet but I am eager to hang in denver on and off 'til the end of the year. i have several clients that could support me coming out and adding to the mix. just need to get a hold of Chris Pappas :) Chris ? You there? y0... washington park, 100 cone course on the flat for fun and folly sound good? maybe draw in some downhill boarders for lookout mountain? how about bolder? :) bolder is KICK ASS for downhill.
Denver rocks. there's a hill off of kipling and 6thAve thatz a real ball burner. and then up I-70, loveland and berthoud pass all the way to the nice streets in steamboat. and durango! that town would be perfect for a slalom race. it would have to be like a slalom camp for two weeks that includes a big race. the town and college were receptive the last time I was there for the race suggestion. so many super hills! hope the surfaces are still good !
i miss CO but I don't miss the smog and thin air. it makes samoans crazier! i need to be at the beach but ... not all the time... looking forward to locking horns with skaters. i lived in denver and golden for 13 years and use to hit the slopes with snowboard and skiis thru the 80's ... nobody allowed snowboards right away but in my later years though everyone said yes to snowboards except for keystone, i'd sneak my board up anyways and get chased down by ski patrol. no way could they catch me until i got to the bottom :( . i don't miss snowboarding and surfing as much as I used to. prefer to surf in hawaii and snowboard only when it's steep and deep. love bump skiing to this very day and will continue to jam until the time I'll need to seek alternate exercise. living at the beach is deluxe. i grab my board nearly daily and sometimes twice a day.... skate to the s. mission jetty and back and in between do laps from the jetty to crystal pier. the locals expect me to be down their often for another chuckle. it's a different perspective that yields splendid exercise and much to discuss and distribute the stoke. got great pubs and kool people all over the beach except for the expected ass#@! % . i'm a great guide so look me up. i feel that now I'm in my 50's.. had kids that are out of the house, remodeling a house at the beach and loving the proximity of it all... I can be of assistance. I am a volunteer usher downtown too so, yea life is winding down in some ways. i learned lots of new things like dealing with women :).
I haunted the market back in the day and I'm back and seriously recreating a new character for skateboarding.. turned on like a bee in a field of yellow nectar i aim to be all about the yandall yellow boards. seriously, these are like a new y0 y0 :) the turning set and torque are something to experience. slalom racers get in the slot with the similar action. for the transition metro skater, that same action can produce endorfins when your body feels that crusading gyroscopic control as weight shift from one hemisphere and that side of body shift totally to the otherside evenly while making sharp turns. i wish i was 30 years younger but this is where i left off and here i am again. not totally out but here swinging away. rumor has it, CW is promoting 2 pages for it. deee-lish-yush! i feel lots of work coming up. and from the day i left home at 18, things keep poppin!

i must be old....i just saw this forum ...stoked i loved the post that cat has with all the 70s stuff....man it brings me back there. i think the song "black betty" was done by nazereth though as i just downloaded it with a bunch of other 70s stuff for my ipod. i can remember just riding poold with nugent blaring!!!! any how masters in deed....anyone 45 or older that is still even rolling down the street on a sk8 is a master. i think that we are going to see a huge masters class in the next few years and will need to have a pro and open division if not even more broken down.....both c-bark and pirnack were talking about the switchover at hood this season and for good reason.....how many times do they want to travel, spend time and money and train to be beat by the young guns???? wait a minute, thats exactly what i do....hummm sure is fun though.....im not that into the whole win, gotta win thing but will stand no chance of podium pie if we dont get the masters group formatted correctly.....looking forward to 09 and plan on racing as much as my pocketbook and help from sponsors will allow happy new year to you all peace WR4
