Widemouth Manor Hotel
Widemouth Bay
Bude Cornwall 01288 361263
(The hotel at the top of the race site, lively place with nightclub...er...the Cornish version anyway, a patch of sticky parquet flooring an ultraviolet light, and plastic glasses)

There are quite a few hotels in Bude itslef, but I'm a snob and I can only reccomend the above...the Chough ('chuff' as in the birdie) is a short drive/taxi from town, but it sits on a clifftop 1/2 way between Bude and the downhill site. Small, but friendly.

Hayle and Bude
On 6/29/2003 Michael (Stride) wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Don't work too hard Mr Dong. Hayle on the Sunday will be a slalom thing only. Not long enough for downhill.

It'll be great to see you down there again Michael, its a different bit of the UK for you to see, and we'll all help you celebrate July 4th if you'd like. Any excuse.

Should you win the Atlantic Ocean is close for Levene to throw you in, so bring swimming trunks.

Oh yes, thanks for the mention on the Slalom forum, and particularly the great review of Brands...how great would it be to get Henry Hester there one year??? We can dream.

slalom at Hayle?
On 6/28/2003 Michael Dong wrote in from (81.131.nnn.nnn)

Howdy. Had a great time at Brands Hatch! Thanks to everyone that made it happen - a very memorable experience. I have been very busy working up here in Chester. Worked 130 hours in the last 2 weeks. Tony Blair is visiting the Aerospace plant on July 4 (peasants like me aren't allowed in the plant)so I am going to try to head down to Bude on Friday. Is there going to be any slalom on Sunday at Hayle or just downhill racing?

Hope to see you all there,

Michael Dong

See you there David, Lucy and I are staying at the Chough as well and will arrive on Friday lunchtime. Perhaps meet up for a drink with anyone who's there. Looking forward to a great weekend skating (Ed, I hope you're coming?).

P.S. Nice to see Floyd on the forum, we miss you Spa!

Me and the bread knife have booked in to the Chough and we will be down at Bude on Thursday. Look forward to seeing everyone Friday night for the riders meeting. Looking forward to a good weekends skating.

My knees are in a bit of a state after Grunigen and I am currently going through that cracking scab, puss sticking to the work trouser phase. I hope that a weekend in shorts will dry them up so that I can get my leathers on for Bude.

Thanks to all for Grunigen it was excellent.

Bude SkateClassic
On 6/28/2003 Michael wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

Checked out Bude yesterday...
The Slalom Road at Crooklets beach will be closed for 2 hours, check in time 9.30, road near Somerfield near the Skatepark, so the proposed Jam format sounds great, plenty of runs for everyone. Anyone that didnt come to Epic, the deal is you get an hour or so to post your fastest time, that way you constantly try to beat the guy (or girl) in front of you time wise. or you can sit it out till the last minute and do a Schumacher style run. The feedback from Epic was that this gave a ton of people more runs than normal.

After the slalom there will be a Tag Team Trick contest at the skatepark. Should be some great skating to watch.

In the afternoon there will be the Downhill Comp, starting at 3 pm or so. Toby at Air Culture has offered the slalomers the chance to do a demo GS course while he works out the downhill qualifiers. The plan is to set a course quickly before qualifying, chalk it up, then bung the cones down and ride the hill. Should keep the spectators happy. I'm thinking that the more the merrier for that bit as we'll need the cones to be replaced quickly as you walk back up the hill. True GS on a closed public raod, by the Atlantic Ocean, nice!

One note, please wear pads. Toby at Airculture has got insurance in place, but would be grateful if even in practice you pad up fully. After recent events thats a wise move. (No leather for slalomers, its a downhill fetish thing I think, ask Darren Rathbone and Johnnyx. If the slaom goes down well, who knows what we could do next year?

Next day its down to Hayle, a ways down the coast. Be prepared for high speed there.

I'm heading down on Friday, staying at the Chough (chuff). Bude is full of crap hotels with way too much nylon (the Strand). The "Chough" is half way between Bude and the Downhill Hill, looks nice, super cool owners. Books up quickly. I can recommend the Barrel Rock Hotel too, great brekkies, nice clean rooms, no coach parties of silver headed people on " Bowling Breaks".

There are plenty of camping places and BandB's too. £5 a tent per night at Bude holiday Park, 01288 355955.

Anyone else going down for Friday eve? Pint in the Pub anyone?

Just a question?
On 6/27/2003 Gaz wrote in from (217.196.nnn.nnn)

For you oldschoolers-
Who was the London skater that used to be on telly(was it Blue Peter)doing demo's a lot and also a steward at Skate City when it first opened?

(BTW: Is a skating website the appropriate place to gloat over the death of someone?)

The Grand Hotel
On 6/27/2003 Smokestack wrote in from (217.35.nnn.nnn)

Yeah Jonny, the concussion from the blast nearly knocked the air out of me, as I was living about 150 yds away at the time. Quite amazing. Especially because myself and a couple of mates were having a bit of sesh at the time.

So we promptly took over a seafront shelter opposite the Grand within 5 mins of the blast, skinned up, and watched the show unfold until dawn.

Although they were the enemy, we offered our help, but no one wanted it. Considering bleeding people were staggering out of the wreckage in their jim jams, and most of the emergency services hadn't yet arrived, we found this most odd. Sod 'em!
