Pauliwog a.k.a. Dr. Morton
On 2/26/2009 Kenny wrote in from United States  (69.223.nnn.nnn)

Did everything you said, except had them make em for me. Got the custy insole which is pushing my step to the inside and has the teardrop metty spreddy.

My foot is hitting the ground on the outside, since that is the way it healed up. I hit my foot pinky-first and its crushing those three little bitch toes. I got some mammoth-wide running shoes and it does feel much better after just a couple hours. Just got em today. This sucks, but I can get a handle on it.

Thanks Pauli. I was ready to get it cut out, which I may still do after the summer. Ryder and I were looking at surgery pics online of Morton removal. It just looks like a piece of cauliflower right between the toes. Lots of horror stories about surgeries gone bad. My guy is an ortho, not pod. Thought about freezing it a 70 below zero in Florida, but heard some bad stories. Could be a crock. People with this start reaching for everything. Kinda rocks your world, but not like the back.

Thanks again. Hopefully, I can get a handle on it. Can still skate and thats the most important. Peace.

INSOLES FOR MORTON'S NUEROMA's
On 2/14/2009 Dr Morton wrote in from (173.8.nnn.nnn)

Look for "FUSSBETT", brown or black, probably made in Germany, available at REAL shoe stores(that employ adults and not just college kids selling athletic shoes who don't know about feet). $20-somthing. Sizes are "Euro" which means a lot more sizes to choose from. I skate with them in my Vans and I skate better as a result and it helps my feet. 2 benefits.

They have a hard plastic underside with a leather top and a tear-drop shaped bulge of foam that goes under the metatarsals to spread them out and take the sqeeze off of that problematic nerve. You can use them by themselves or on top or other insoles (like the US brand "SOLE", $40-something, which is made to be molded to your foot by putting them in the oven, instructions come in the package. I don't mold mine because I want the full upward push in the medial arch-the side of your foot that faces your other foot).

If you're crafty and handy, you can(if needed) pull the leather top back and carefully peel the foam teardrop bulge off the plastic base and move it around sampling different postions with tape then gluing or taping it back in place. This can happen if the overall Fussbett insole feels right but the "bulge" is in the wrong place on one foot or the other since most people's feet are assymtrical, mine are for sure.

Also you will save a ton of time and money by doing it yourself and getting it right and not going to a podiatrist who can only make guesses about what he/she "thinks" your foot feels like when they have the super-expensive orthotics made on order that may or may not work then you have to go through the expense and time all over again to get them "dialed in". If you want it done right, do it yourself. Pack your own parachute.

Now, punch yourself in the stomach, get a fire in your gut and go kick some ass -Dr Morton

Morton's Neuromas
On 2/13/2009 Morton's Nueroma 2-time Veteran wrote in from (173.8.nnn.nnn)

Things to DO:
1)Shoes wide in the toes and NOT SQUEEZING THE FOOT AT ALL. Use Vans Hightops and avoid Converse Hightops like the plague when skating - I think you're already on that page if my memory is correct.
2)Socks a bit loose and NOT at all squeezing the foot.
3)AVOID flipflops, AVOID shoes with EVA foam that feel "cushy" and that you think should help since they're soft. Those soft foams will collapse toward the center and your metatarsal will get squeezed together and irritating that nerve.
4)Wear shoes that have some good shock absorption but are firm under the ball of the foot.
5)Use a good arch support that will also spread out your metatarsals so that touchy nerve does'nt get sqeezed. Go to a good shoe store that has a lot of the better insoles and talk to a shoe person who knows about foot problems not some athletic footwear place with a bunch of young college kids who don't know anything about foot/back/bone/etc problems like we do.

Things to AVOID:
1)Surgery- it will do NO good at all if the causes of the nueroma aren't taken care of, which usually are shoe related more than anything else. Plus you could very likely end up with a "stump nueroma" afterward at the site of the "stump" where the nerve was cut out.
2)Fast expectations- It took me a few months to really get as functional as I wanted, 6 months to call it "pretty good" and about 1 year to be "back to normal". I still have shop for shoes on the loose side but it's not a problem and now that I wear better shoes and insoles, the Morton's Nueroma led me to learn a lot and in the long run I'm better for it.

Schlater - Dr Morton.

Aspen, Texas, life
On 2/12/2009 Kenny wrote in from United States  (69.223.nnn.nnn)

I am really not going to Texas. No cashy washy. Still wounded from Hawaii and not sure if I have saved enough for 2008 income taxes. Also, Australia April 4- 15th. Thats gonna hurt a little.

So really not going to Texas. The heel is better, but I have had Morton's Neuroma since my crash. I noticed it right away and just thought it was my foot nerves coming back to life. I can still skate, but not walk too much. Like about 10 minutes and its hot-foot-nerve pain. I had two shots in the nerve and the doc said "should go away with this". But it didnt. I did some digging and its for sure Morton's Neuroma. Between the third and fourth toe.

I feel like such a pussy. The rest of my body is feeling so good. I am fit, and ready to charge. Just can't walk too long. Its gotten worse the past year and a half. Used to happen when I wore tight shoes (work or skate) but now happens with flip flops and clogs. This kinda sucks, but I can still snowboard, bike, and skate the park. Just not walk for slalom.

But if I could I would show Jason, Ramon, Dom and all those other pussies who's boss - NOT. Even if I could walk, I would be a second-stringer.

Indian School GEO? I am going to Mammoth Mountain in April to see Ethan in the Volcum Peanut Butter and Rail jam !!!!!!!!!! He got invited by placing in a Tahoe contest.

We went to the Opening Ceremony of the Eddie and it was the highlight of our 2008 trip. Enjoy.

and then they all paddled out in the sunset, caught a few waves, and then had a nice meal in the moonlight. A great way to end a great vacation. I may never really learn how to surf a real wave, but it sure is fun trying every December on the North Shore of Oahu.

with the recent proliferation of steep start ramps, what, if anything, is being done to make sure this doesn't happen

an incident such as this at a slolam race would set the sport back to the days of ball bearings (no pun intended)

Tway'z....The Nigh Before Xmas
On 12/24/2008 Santa Cruise wrote in from United States  (75.91.nnn.nnn)

Twas the night before christmas, when all through the Farm
Not a Downhillbilly was stirring, not even Marion Karr;
The bushings were placed in the GOG's with care,
In hopes that BIG DON soon would be there;

The "skaters" were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Joe Iacovelli danced in their heads;
And Kenny in his spandex, and I with my rap,
Had enough of this beer bellied longboarders crap

When up on the start ramp there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the curb to see what was the matter.
Away to the hill I flew like a flash,
Tore my achilles tendon and threw up from cheap hash.

The moon on the breast of the New England snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to bald heads below,
When, what to my wondering eyes was I facing,
But Hackett, oLsOn, and Black Leather Racing,

And a little old rider, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Jack Smith.
More rapid than eagles his courses they set,
And he hooted, and hollered, and called them by name;

"Now, Gilmour! now, Tucker! now, Maysey and Joe!
On, ICK STICK! on AXE! on, PAVEL and ROE!
To the top of the hill! to the top of the road!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away gOAd!"

As dry leaves that before the wild Mollica fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, criddle to the sky,
So up to the hill-top the racers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Indys, and Radikal's too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney Arab came with a bound.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And replaced all the bushings; then called me a jerk,
And laying his finger inside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he rode out of sight, "YOUR TRUCKS SUCK!"

without further adieu
On 12/23/2008 ho ho ho wrote in from United States  (75.91.nnn.nnn)

Everyone in Carolina Liked Skating a lot…
But Skitch, Who lived just north of Skatesville, Did NOT!
Skitch hated skating! The whole slolam season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn’t up his ass just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his pants were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his stoak was two sizes too small.
Whatever the reason, His stoak or his pants,
He stood there on Hillbilly Hill, raving his rants,
Staring down from his roost with a sour, Skitchy frown,
At the blazing session below in their town.
For he knew every grom down in Skatesville beneath,
Was busy now, skating and laughing on every street
“And they’re grinding our rails!” he snarled with a sneer,
“Tomorrow is Dixie Cup! It’s practically here!”
Then he growled, with his Skitch fingers nervously drumming,
“I MUST find some way to stop slolam season from coming!”
For Tomorrow, he knew, all the grom girls and boys,
Would wake bright and early. They’d ollie their toys!
And then! Oh, the noise! Oh, the Noise!
Noise! Noise! Noise!
That’s one thing he hated! The NOISE!
NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!
Then the young and old, would carve and grind the deep.
Carve the deep! Carve the deep! Carve the Deep! DEEP! DEEP! DEEP!
They would feast on steel coping, and rare bullnose brick.
Which was something Skitch couldn’t stand in the least!
And THEN They’d do something He liked least of all!
Every Hillbilly down in Skatesville, the big and the small,
Would skate close together, with slolam bells ringing.
They’d skate hand-in-hand. And the Hillbillys would start turning!
They’d turn! And they’d turn! And they’d TURN!
TURN! TURN! TURN!
And the more Skitch thought of these Hillbillys turning,
The more Skitch thought, “I must stop this whole thing!”
“Why, for fifty-seven years I’ve put up with it now!”
“I MUST stop slolam season from coming! But HOW?”
Then he got an idea! An awful idea!
SKITCH GOT A WONDERFUL, AWFUL IDEA!
“I know just what to do!” SKITCH laughed in his throat.
And he made a quick skate logo hat and a coat.
And he chuckled, and clucked, “What a great Skitchy session!”
“With this hoodie and this trucker hat, I look just like a hessian!”
“All I need is a kicktail…” Skitch looked around.
But, since kicktails are scarce, there was none to be found.
Did that stop the old Skitch? No! Skitch simply said,
“If I can’t find a kicktail, I’ll foam wedge instead!”
So he called his dog, Don. Then he took some red thread,
And he tied a big horn on the top of Don's head.
THEN He loaded some bags And some old empty sacks,
On a ramshackle sleigh And he hitched up big Don.
Then Skitch said, “Giddap!” And the sleigh started down,
Toward the homes where the Whos Lay asnooze in their town.
All their windows were dark. Quiet snow filled the air.
All the Whos were all dreaming sweet dreams without care.
When he came to the first little house on the square.
“This is stop number one,” the old bastard Skitch hissed,
And he climbed to the roof, dropped his drawers, took a piss.
Then he slid down the chimney. A rather tight bitch.
But, if Santa could do it, then so could Skitch.
He got stuck only once, for a moment or two.
Then he stuck his head out of the fireplace flue.
Where the little cones all stood in a row.
“These cones,” he grinned, “are the first things to go!”
Then he slithered and slunk, with a smile most unpleasant,
Around the whole room, and he took every kicktail!
Elements! And Habitats! REAL Skateboards! Deathwish!
Consolidated! Chocolate! Girl! And Creature!
And he stuffed them in bags. Then Skitch, very nimbly,
Stuffed all the bags, one by one, up the chimney!
Then he slunk to the mini ramp. He took the coping!
He took the wax! He took the beer cooler!
He cleaned out that icebox as quick as a flash.
Why, Skitch even took their last can of Monster Energy Drink!
Then he stuffed all the food up the chimney with glee.
“And NOW!” grinned Skitch, “I will steepen the start ramps!”
And Skitch grabbed the ramp, and he started to steepen,
When he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove.
He turned around fast, and he saw a small hillbilly!
Little Cindy-Lou Hillbilly, who was not more than two.
Skitch had been caught by this tiny daughter,
Who’d got out of bed for a cup of cold water.
She stared at Skitch and said, “What's that smell?,”
“Why are you tightening our trucks? WHY?”
But, you know, that old Skitch was so smart and so slick,
He thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick!
“Why, my sweet little tot,” the fake Hessian lied,
“There’s a truck on thie board that won’t turn to one side.”
“So I’m taking it home to my workshop, my dear.”
“I’ll fix it up there. Then I’ll bring it back here.”
And his fib fooled the child. Then he patted her head,
And he got her a drink and he sent her to bed.
And when Cindy-Lou Hillbilly went to bed with her cup,
He went to the start ramp and steepened it up!
Then the last thing he took Was the foam for their wedges!
Then he went up the chimney, himself, the old liar.
On their boards he left nothing but hardware and some stickers.
And the stimulator bushing that he left in the house,
Was one that was even too soft for a mouse.
Then he did the same thing To the other Hillbilly houses
Leaving bushings Much too soft For the other Hillbilly mouses!
It was quarter past dawn… All the Hillbillys, still a-bed,
All the Hillbillys, still asnooze When he packed up his sled,
Packed it up with their cones! The bushings! The bearings!
The foam wedges! The kicktail trimmings!
Three thousand feet up! Up the side of Mt. Crumpim,
He rode with his cones to the tiptop to dump them!
“PoohPooh to the Hillbillys!” he was skitchishly humming.
“They’re finding out now that no slolam is coming!”
“They’re just waking up! I know just what they’ll do!”
“Their mouths will hang open a minute or two,
Then the Hillbillys down in Skatesville will all cry BooHoo!”
“That’s a noise,” grinned Skitch, “That I simply MUST hear!”
So he paused. And Skitch put his hand to his ear.
And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow.
But the sound wasn’t sad! Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn’t be so! But it WAS merry! VERY!
He stared down at SKatesville! Skitch popped his eyes!
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Everyone down in Skatesville, the fat and the skinny,
Was skating! Without even a mini!
He HADN’T stopped slolam season from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And Skitch, with his bare-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?”
“It came with out Radikals! It came without GOGS!”
“It came without Pocket Pistols, Roes or Fullbags!”
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then Skitch thought of something he hadn’t before!
“Maybe skateboarding,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a cone.”
“Maybe skateboarding…perhaps…means a little bit more!”
And what happened then? Well…in Skatesville they say,
That Skitch’s truck loosened that day!
And the minute his truck didn’t feel quite so tight,
He whizzed on his board through the bright morning light,
And he brought back the kicktails! And the light for the deep!
And he, HE HIMSELF! Skitch carved the deep end!
