Hey David, I've only hit that corner while doing Giant Slalom, so I have no idea how much speed that you carry from the straights and the lefty that precedes it. What is the setup like for the left and then the hairpin? Dive right in? Airbrake? Footbrake? It looks like tons of fun.
I'm going to be at a family reunion (weeeh) in Boise Idaho at the time of the next Maryhill race, so I probably won't get a chance to take that turn. Darn.

John, I don't make the calls, and I wans't there when the call was made, nor did I try to influence the call after it was made. You may not be aware that I was NOT at the line. The 4 guys who were at the line were Marcus Rietema (IGSA), G.F. Hurley (Title Sponsor who awards speedboarding's cash and prizes), Erik Basil (still photos for SilverfishLongboarding_com), and Bob Ozman (IGSA) with a video camera. When you guys went by me, it was you, Dave, then Jimmy.
Here was my view of the finish.
By the time that I made it down to the tent, the call had already been made, and Bob was showing the others the video footage that he captured at the line. Here is my understanding of what they all agreed that they saw in the video. Jimmy's helmet had eclipsed yours by the time that you two hit the line. Remember, I'm just a messenger here, and I'm not offering anything but pictures and what I heard. From Bob's perspective directly over the line, and Jimmy being nearer to the camera than you, if you had successfully held Jimmy off at the line, then there would be a visible gap between your helmets all the way up to (and including) the line. What they said that they saw in a frame by frame viewing of the tape was Jimmy's helmet getting closer, then being even, then eclipsing your helmet, just before the line.
Was it close? Yes. Was the video blurry? Probably. Were your helmets both white? Absolutely. Was the call hard to make? Probably. Was there anything conclusive, either way? It's hard to say. If there isn't anything conclusive, should you guys have tied, flipped a coin, or should it resort to qualifying? What exactly should be done? Apparantly they thought that they had evidence of an outcome. Jimmy qualified less than 1/10 of a second ahead of you. It was that close.

I put all the photos that may be relevant to the outcome on that page for you. I show the contrast in styles, not as an offer of proof, but only as a comparison that could be useful in understanding what could have happened. Check it out and tell us if you think that there is anything unfair or inconsistent in any of the pictures. It's all "circumstantial", with the possible exception of the video, which I don't have, and we'd all like to see.

I vote for instant replay. All this controversy. I say we start instant replay at all regional levels and then move to World Cups by 2007. Now Bob you only have 2 minutes and a pit crew member has to throw in the red towel. If you overturn then it's all good. If it's not overturned then the racers who protests loses all points for the race. I think you should impound his board also. :)

John,
Chris doesn't have a camera shot taken straight down the line. He's not hiding anything from you, and has taken particular care to examine the hi-res photos. By the way, he also went to the booth and spent real time and effort to discuss and inquire how Bob and Marcus were going to make the call. Much of that discussion was on "your behalf" before he heard what the video shows...so if you feel like he's not supporting you "enough", I think you're being unfair.
I don't have a shot straight down the line, either. I figured out that I couldn't pan quickly enough to nail you guys right when you crossed the line at the speeds you were finishing at, so I moved to a different position from one where I have shots of you crossing the line in the heats. If you want to see some of those photos, we uploaded 253 of them onto Silverfish, very early this morning. You can see the shot I managed to get (it's been posted here) along with several that Chris got from his vantage point. By the way, I was able to rap off about 2.5 fps, and Chris can hit 5fps, but you guys are moving kinda fast.
Finally, I spent significant time with Bob and Marcus reviewing the tape that Bob took from "Exactly on the line" (you can see him in some of my other shots). GFHurley looked in, too, although this was Bob's "call". You're right that it was hard to see fine detail, particularly because you guys both have white helmets. We were also using the LCD screen on the side of the camera, so Bob reviewed the tape, frame by frame, at least 10 times. We used a straightedge to chase the lines of your boards and helmets. We played it upside-down, to change our perspective. After Chaput came to the booth (from his angle, he thought YOU were ahead at the line), we fired-up the display features on our cameras to "play back our stills", but the little LCDs were just too small for it to be useful. Then, Bob reviewd the video, frame by frame, again. You saw how long it took for the "word" to come out of the booth.
I have to tell you this: Bob Ozman took it very seriously, took all the time he felt he needed to come to a conclusion and did it with a lot of apparent fairness. I saw the video, and agree with the conclusion.
If Bob gets a "Frame-shot" from the video, we'll run it in our race coverage article.

it was way fun to have like 18 riders at bonelli never ridden with so many people at once before. Theres noting like going down a hill with 17 other riders behind you in front of you and passing you all the way down the hill, the last fun run was defintly worth going for!!! I hope that many people even more show up next month, thanks to everyone who made sat. a challenge!

Chris, I find it irritating that you will post everything but the true shot of the finish line in the final race. You couldn't have missed it w/ that camera unless you had a flashback dude! Is there something to hide? You spend time superimposing qualifying shots and draw in some ill angled "black" line instead of showing the truth. I don't appreciate your Photoshop interpretation of what transpired. If you don't have the shot then please don't act like an authority.
According to Bob Ozman, his 8mm camcorder was used to make the call. If it was shot 90 degrees to the roadway, I imagine it is pretty blurry and difficult to see what transpired. I have shot video like this and it is very blurred. Frame by frame analysis is difficult and when two riders have the same color helmet it would be very hard to differentiate the two.
All I ask for is the shot that shows us at the line. Why not give David and Brent the satisfaction of viewing that as well? Stop toying with us and divulge what you have. Is the corner of that one shot the final or not? Don't be weak Chris!

TimeShip Racing is announcing the TSR 2006 Series this week, and it will be posted on the contest calendar very soon. There will be a few changes from last year so be sure to read all of the info carefully and sign up early.
Maryhill will be the site of the North American Speedboard Championship, June 24th and 25th, 2006. I realize that this date is in conflict with the IGSA European Championship. This was not intentional and I hope that few racers will find it a problem. These dates fall on the same weekend as Maryhill last year and are situated between some of the other major DH races held here in North America: Danger Bay, the Bear, Vernon, Kimberly, US Nationals, Top Challenge and Sandia.
TSR is pursuing a philosophy of 100% skateboarding and in an effort to create a cohesive season of skateboard racing, the 2006 TSR Series will include (at least) the following DH and Slalom events:
The 5th annual race at Bear is the Worlds Largest Banked Slalom. There will also be a Banked Slalom and a Slalom race. It will be May 27th and 28th, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM. The 2nd annual North American Speedboard Championships at Maryhill, the most technical course in North America with 22 turns and mega tail winds. We’re running Cowzer Corner too so get ready. It will be June 24th and 25th, 2006 in Goldendale, WA.
Hood River Slalom Race will have Tight and Giant Slalom and will be held July 15th and 16th, 2006 in Hood River, Oregon.
The 3rd annual US Nationals of Skateboard Racing will include Tight Slalom, Giant Slalom and a Downhill. It will be held on August 18, 19 and 20th, 2006 in Golden, CO. The DH will be held on Look Out Mtn. Pass at over 10,000-ft elevation. Vail Pass helped initiate the Slalomeers into DH, now it’s time to step it up! TSR will again award the Overall Champion $1000 cash.
The 5th annual Top Challenge Speedboarding Event will be held Sept. 2nd and 3rd, 2006 in Montreal, Canada
The La Costa Open will be 2 days of high-speed Tight and Giant slalom racing. It will be held on the legendary hills of La Costa, CA, September 16th and 17th 2006.
The 6th annual Sandia All Around Challenge will be 6 events including a Slalom race, Downhill race, Cross-town race, High Jump, Ollie Jump, and 360s. It will be held September 23rd and 24th, 2006 and TSR will award the Series winner $1000 at the conclusion of this event.
Look on the contest calendar for details on each event as they become available.

Thanks for all of the awesome pics Chris. Thank you for sponsoring the Street Luge class as well. I'll write a story about the event today and Erik will post a story and pictures of the event later this week on SilverFish. I think that was the closest finish I have witnessed in 10 years of organizing events! Ozman rechecked the video of the finish on a large screen and confirmed that Jimmy earned 2nd place. He is working on capturing the frame of video so that we can post it. Thank you to everyone who attended the race and GF Hurley for sponsoring the Downhill Skateboarding class. That was the best racing I have seen in a long time.

Hey Rick, You remember how close Jimmy and John were at the line?
Here is the contrast in tucks and helmets that made the difference between 2nd and 3rd place. Jimmy leans forward a bit more and his helmets sticks out past the nose of his board a few more inches than John. In several photos I noticed that their tucks and foot placement was consistent through qualifying and racing.
Here is the picture at the finish line in the finals. Jimmy's heel (left) and John's heel (right) are crossing the line at exactly the same time, meaning that the boards are essentially tied, but Jimmy's helmet "wins by a nose".
