A place for the dead and dying
On 3/23/2021 BoBo wrote in from United States  (76.118.nnn.nnn)

It's been some years since I've been here. I used to post daily when slalom was big. I hope Arab, Chaput, Gilmour and all the rest are doing well. I'm doing fine despite the lockdowns and all that BS. You guys in Cali have it bad. Maybe it's time to leave?

Just thought I'd post something, anything. It's been a long time and this place is quiet.

Adam, I hope you are well too. Almost forgot ya.

CW editor doesn't know jacksh*t from 'good' writing to bad. He let the skatedads boss him around in the early days after he just renamed IL to CW, so fatdadz everywhere could feel safe showin their kids the mag. Brooke got into a biz that was breathing its last gasps when he started. Print advertising? You're kidding, right? Yeah, but you can't tell him that. There's always been periods of total horsesh*t in skateboarding. Hype. Hype sells ese. There wasn't any arena for a small minority of oldsters jumping back on their groove trains and trying to be relevant in skateboarding again. Thrasher sure as hell wasn't interested in the fatdads and their stories about the glory days of skating and boring the millenials to tears about it. Got so bad you'd see fatdads on their billion dollar skateboards barking like seals at any little six year old that dropped in on them ("Dude! Don't drop in on brah's, mannnn" ). So CW was a little mirror they could look in and see themselves. The problem is, they wanted it both ways. They wanted this kewl skatezine but also wanted to read the same boring stories over and over about how kewl they still were at 49 and went into heart failure in the early days of CW when some word like 'damn' showed up. And Brook cannot stand criticism, he ignored smaller vendors, he'd bait writers for stories and then not come through and even lose the work they'd done...he didn't have a clue what he was doing then. Karma's a b*tch and people, even old people, eventually grow up. Now, those who interpret 'grow up' as 'stop skating' - those were your diehard CW supporters. They couldn't tell a fruit bat from a bunghole and would swallow both if you said Alva had touched them LOL

Dogtown

I came across a request for Copies of Concrete Wave Magazine Artilcle called Confessions of a Dogtown Girl Volume 3 #5 from 2005 that my sister Debbe Zenter (Romo)wrote about growing up in Dogtown. My sisters story was just basic history of our family in Santa Monica. Her story didn't detail the Dogbowl or Bay street @ night Parties at the Beach by Bicknell Hill and The Beach House part of the P.O.P. Amusement Park and the Backyard Parties with Bands like Suicidal Tendencies and all the Surf Flicks at Santa Monica Civic. We grew up in a good time and wouldn't trade it for anything. Wish they would have let her write more about our crazy fun times...Perhaps we will one day. Thanks~Dt Chick

I just wanted to say hi to all the guys and girls who make these great events happen. I am a NorCal resident and I would like to get involved in competition in my location of California. Can you contact me and instruct me on how one may begin his journey. Tell me a starting point and what ever else I may need to know. Thank you for the great and informative website here. Take care and God Bless! Rich

I'd like to drop a little note of gratitude to the folks that run this site. It's really great having this window into the history of longboarding available to all of us! For the past few years, I've been on a quest to recreate some of the boards that the guys rode in the Gravity Games, and NCDSA has been incredibly helpful in nailing down the little details for my pet project.

Thanks Adam, and everybody else! I hope NCDSA can stay up for another 16 years!

Adam, I know that there's a ton of time and patience involved in building any kind of forum. I tried it once and yeesh, I'd rather have ice picks driven into my eye sockets LOL It's a lot of work and many, many hours staring at a computer screen and noodling around on a keyboard when you know that no matter what you do, the peanut gallery is ready to fling their criticisms ( and yes, I sometimes occupy the peanut gallery myself lol ). I know that whatever you do will be one immense act of dedication, just as this site always has been and I hope you find whatever the coming attractions may be, gratifying to have created. I also hope you are well appreciated by the many skaters who have stuck around, those who have been given their own forums, and all of us who anxiously anticipate whatever is to come.

snoball,

As I re-read this thread's recent past I see that another six months have slipped by on my vBulletin vows. But I have real progress to report: I've been using vBulletin on another (not skateboard-related) web site and I'm learning its vast feature set. This eliminates one hurdle from the conversion process.

IMHO, it is chasing a chicken to go about 'filtering' or censoring people's OPINIONS in any way. For one, the importance or non-importance of anyone's point of view is subjective. For two, all arguments eventually die out. Don't like 'em? Don't read them. Just like your TV channel. Turn it or turn it off. But asking Adam to police everyone's words and thoughts is kinda juvenile.

What you find important I might not. And vice-versa. I don't think it's appropriate or realistic to expect others to adjust their opinions or manner of speaking( writing ) to my own. I kind of think if you're going to spend time filtering things, filtering images is more important than filtering out written thoughts.

That said, I do agree that a registration process is reasonable and it might be time to update the overal appearance and user interface of the site. Though, please, don't turn it into a blinking banner ad site if you can avoid it. Some sites are so grossly indulgent of that they're eye-crossing to look at.

Your site's been around a long time Adam and I hope it can kind of wake from a recent slumber and evolve into something better than your online competition out there. No offense, but I think the site got slightly 'stale' or stuffy in terms of overall 'vibe', and that's one reason that other site was able to draw off some of the crowd that used to be here. That you haven't stooped to some of their methods, though, speaks volumes about you, but maybe it's time to build a more relevant or newer version of the NCDSA site now??

Don,

You're actually only seeing the tip of the iceberg! Our server rejects hundreds per day and even forums that use logins are not immune to forum spam. I have, however, been considering migrating Ncdsa away from this homemade forum software to a commercial forum software platform like vBulletin. I went so far as to purchase vBulletin last year but have yet to find the time to install it and write the data conversion scripts necessary to get it running and support Ncdsa's existing functionality and advertising.

On 4/2/2008 don ron wrote in from United States  (64.252.nnn.nnn)

can we please make this site have a sign in and register thing so people cant post so much spam anymore. its really getting to the point where i dont even want to come here anymore. i really dont post that often but i've always read the boards regardless over the past 8 years. it saddens myself and im sure countless others to see this site that was once such a tight community of laid back friendly people turned into this constant bickering and spamming. It brings everyone down when they have to read the arguments and fighting over such pointless details in the grand scheme of things. i think everyone needs to step back and look at why they were drawn to this sport to begin with and why youre still with it today. yes, it is growing rapidly, perhaps more than anyone could have forseen but we need to embrace these changes. we need to set an example and lead the way for the new generations of our sport. no matter what the discipline is we all need to come together and enjoy it. its time to stop spreading rumors, hate, arguments, and whatever other nonsense has been going on and time to spread the stoke and the true values that are in this sport. who knows if my post will make any difference at all but im just happy to get this all out. like i said, its been painful to watch one of my favorite websites go downhill recently (no pun intended), and all i want is to see some changes so that people will register and the spam and hate posts will stop. i think that ive rambled on for long enough now. hopefully, this gets out to people and makes some sort of impact, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
peace
don ron
